Your second paragraph got my attention :)

I’ve had my 2018 TRDOR for a little less than 2 months, and I’m really wanting to safely get it a bit dirty. Mechanically, it’s bone stock, and will probably stay that way. Just want to use the features of the truck for something other than decoration. Any suggestions for something mild in the greater Northern Kentucky area?

There is a trail system called the daniel boone backcountry byway in the RRG area that has the full spectrum of trail difficulty on it- we can easily find you some stuff to show you what the truck will do without too much risk of real damage. @rdpoe can chime in on this- he's stock save 255 ST Maxx's, and went with us last weekend. To drive my tire point home- he was getting through stuff that a supremely built truck that was still on stock sized KO2s was getting stuck. The reality is, if you show up at a meet with any of the Cinci/KY/TN crew we aren't going to take you somewhere that will bust your truck up. I'd like to think we do a good job of picking stuff everyone can go enjoy.

    @KY_Rob

I can confirm that a stock truck on 255/85r16 will out drive the driver.

I had zero off road experience this weekend when I went out with @Jibbs et al.

I didn’t get stuck once, not even close really. I had to take a couple goes at one hill because I was chicken and learning but after that the truck was outstanding. I’m so freaking impressed with it.

Get good tires. For KY terrain I don’t think I can recommend KO2s. I would go with Cooper ST MAXX like I have. Outstanding tires and look mean as fuck on the truck.

Thanks for the replies @Jibbs and @rdpoe ! Much appreciated.

I’ll definitely have to make sure to get hooked into one of the upcoming outings.

I also have a TRDOR and am about to add a skid plate, but it's otherwise stock. I live in Cincy, and am also interested in some light off roading.

I've been checking out info on the DBBB, but am having a hard time figuring everything out. If anyone wants to run some of the easier sections over a weekend and I happen to be free, I'll be all over it. I will be 100% useless for anything other than following the truck in front of me. Lol

I was in the same boat last weekend. I just followed the more experienced guys (other than driving in alone in the pitch black) and everything went well. I’d def recommend skids and absolutely sliders. I wish I had them. It escaped with barely a scratch.

The truck is way more capable than me/you at this point.

Didn’t your truck come with skid plates?

I’ve honestly never driven anywhere I’d need sliders or skids. Growing up, and into my early 20’s my grandparents and then my dad lived “back up the holler” in WV. Those roads were steep, slippery, rutted out, muddy messes and I loved driving them. They were nothing like some of the KY roads of the DBBB I’ve seen recently in YouTube videos. Don’t think I’m ready for that anytime soon.

As far as capability of the truck, I think you’re spot on.

I don't trust that flimsy splash guard to protect critical components contacting any hard surfaces .

It’s stronger than you think, but reinforced 3/16 steel is better...

My factory skid would like to have a word. Bash it before you bash it. Lots of parroting on this forum about the factory skids being useless but they will take a ton of abuse before they actually fail. Mine is still in one piece and I don't exactly baby it.

For $240 during the TRD sale, the peace of mind was worth it.

Did you get the TRD skid? I'm genuinely interested in if that's actually any stronger than the factory skid. Is it thicker or anything? They're both aluminum afaik

The problem with the aluminum TRD ones is if you abuse them the will deform and be hard to remove impossible to reinstall. They give fair protection though.

My 220lb fat ass can stand on the Pro skid plate, and it barely flexed. The original skid plate was beginning to deform with about 50-70lbs of my weight in it. It would have easily folded in half with all of my weight. The rear section of the factory skid plate could probably be folded in half by hand.

I realize that the by being bolted to the truck, it is much more likely to keep it's shape.

For $240, I'm happy with my purchase.

If anyone happens to want the factory skid plate, hit me up. I'll let it go cheap.
