I am a long time member of "TW" and am just starting to read some of the add forums, I am glad I found this one as I have a question some of the gun guys may have the answers, I have a very nice S&W .357 686-3, 1992, It gets very little range time however it did get to the range this past week, after a few rounds I couldn't get the cylinder open, the extractor rod had worked itself loose with a little finesse the cylinder opened and I finger tighten it up , at home I took a closer look, it would appear that the first few threads on the rod are worn smooth (keep in mind my gun knowledge is very limited) maybe they are suppose to be that way(?). I would (and will) replace the rod when I find one. in the mean time is lock tight an expectable solution? (had a guy tell me it was a fix) The other question is just how tight or how much pressure should i put on the rod? any and all advise will be appreciated, Thanks

The ejector rod working loose on 686's seems to be a fairly common problem; I've seen it pop up before on the S&W forum. I think Brownell's sells an 'ejector rod tool' that makes it a really easy fix, but I'm not sure on the thread design, to be honest.

Edit- Here's a shot of what the rod is supposed to look like, according to a parts site.

I LOVE that one - you have an excellent collection - I have a few old S & W and one old Colt - others are all newer, but the old Colts...IMO no better trigger ever made.

Thanks for the comment and the photo, I checked at Brownell's and they are out of the ejector rods (6") I didn't check for the tool, I will keep checking with them and I will look at some other gun suppliers also, Thanks again

I would give S&W a call. Their customer service is very good. They should be able to give you some insight into the best method of correcting the problem.

Yes, Locktite will work, Use a pair of pliers and a strip of GOOD leather between the jaws of the pliers and the extractor rod. Do NOT reef on the extractor without the cylinder and crane being supported or you will be sorry. Place expended cases in 4 of the cylinder holes and place two hardwood dowels in the other two others with another one in between them to hold the cylinder in place so no sideways force is exerted on the crane. De-grease the threads well on the extractor and the crane threads, use just a small dab of locktite. Tighten until snug. Do not allow the jaws of the pliers to touch the rod, make sure the leather is between the two.
