Will not pull boat (for Jay) up an incline

Traction might be increased but a heavier LT tire puts more load on the drivetrain and a larger than stock diameter effectively raises the gear ratio thus decreasing pulling power. I don't think tires are the problem, but they certainly aren't helping him.

 

Would low ATF or Motor oil being overfilled have anything to do with this?

Agree, except that ECT controls the transmission; it won't have any effect in S1.

 

Here's an idea, you may think your brakes are fine on the trailer, but jack up each side and see how much resistance there is. If there is none, then you have deeper issues.

Are the trailer tires freely spinning when pulling it? Can someone verify it as you're pulling it? I'm pointing towards something with the solenoid on that trailer or something else with the trailer.

 

reverse in the MT kinda sucks when towing, but forward is usually not a problem at all. I have towed a ~23 ski boat with trailer out of a lake a few times, dump trailer with loam, rock, etc.. many times. As said, reverse sucks, but forward is easy.

 

I'm aware that 'ECT on' effects the trans shift points. However 'ECT on' has the added effect of sharpening throttle response somewhat. So the basis for my advice was by selecting sequential shift mode 1, he can keep the trans in the only gear ratio he has (no 4 lo) that will allow him max torque. By pushing the ECT button he will have slightly sharper throttle response. Might keep the truck from bogging down as much.

However my money is still on an issue with the trailer brakes.

You got something wrong with your truck, I pulled a 3200 lb. Trailer up and over Red Ridge pass in CO. Over 11200 ft elevation and at the top I was rolling over 50 MPH with no problems. Hope you get it figured out and good luck.

 

I saw a Tacoma today pulling quite a large travel trailer.

 

We have a gravel boat launch at the lake, tried using a two wheel drive GMC Sierra spun right away, and it's not that steep but the gravel is loose. Four wheel drive makes a huge difference over two wheel and a locker in my experience.

 

I'll second adding more weight to the back of the truck, either tongue weight or sand bags. It's so easy with these trucks to not have traction of in 2WD if the bed has no weight in it.

I got stuck yesterday in my sprinter van for that exact reason, stopped on an incline and had to put it in 4WD just to get out.

2WD is really 1WD in low traction, and 2WD locked can make it much easier to break traction on BOTH tires in conditions like you describe.

I think something is very strange with OP's post. How in the hell can't you pull 400 pound up a grade ?

A problem with traction control is really a problem with traction. Fix the traction not the traction control.

 

Agreed. Although in this case I really think there is an issue with the trailer brakes.
