I just brought my new Taco home from the dealership last night and I love it. not sure what kind of breakin procedures I should follow if any besides the standard oil change after 500 - 1000 miles. We are taking a road trip this weekend to move my sister in for her first year of college. Its about a 400 mile round trip and the vehicle would be loaded down with people and her stuff. My truck only has 76 miles on it so far and I was just wondering if it would matter to take it on a trip like that so soon. This is my first NEW new car so I want to do it right.

The oil change is after 5,000 miles, no?

I was in the same position last month -- I bought my 4x4 regular cab in Phoenix, AZ, but had to drive it home to Barstow (~400 miles) CA, within several days after the purchase.

I put at least 120 miles on her before the drive back. I didn't like doing it, but we survived :D! I have since done a 1800 mile road trip, too.

My only advice: NO hot-dogging, NO racing of the engine, and NO speeds faster than 2800 rpms. And if it's a manual tranny ... don't lug the engine. The manual says to not maintain steady speeds, but that's kind of hard on the freeways.

Also, in spite of the normal oil change period of 5K miles, I did have it changed it at 3K miles.

There is so much opinion on this question, that I think the best advice is "go for it, but do it in moderation -- nothing excessive."

    Good luck and enjoy!

I don't think you need to do an oil change at 1000 miles, just wait till the recomended 5k point
