It would both me, but I guess it would also depend on the rest of the truck.

The rust on the front side of the engine would indicate that they never really had any oil leaks, and they did mostly highway miles (salt and slush blasting in through the grill)

Looks dirty but not corroded. Most of the stuff you can see under the hood is plastic and rubber

Look at the hose clamps on the intake, the power steering pump and the valve behind it they are rusted.

Guess it would depend on how long you plan to keep it but I wouldn’t pay for rust.

So it’s a Canadian model? What’s the process of registering and getting a title for that in your state?

It seems cheap to me, but I haven’t shopped 4cyl access cabs. Might be a good commuter if it’s not a forever truck.

As far as it seems the 2016-2017 Tacoma’s are supposedly having frame issues and on Toyota’s frame rot campaign list. I live in Buffalo NY, and while I undercoated my frame as soon as I got it the rest of the components I didn’t cover have already been coated with rust. My Tacoma looked worse underneath in the first 6 months than my previous F150 and frontier did after 3 years. And the F150 I never ended up coating. Pretty sad how bad these trucks rust, and that after so many years Toyota still can’t get it right.

That being said if you have any worries about frame rust/rot and plan to buy and keep a Tacoma for the long haul, I wouldn’t recommend any truck that has came from the salt belt, for any amount of time. Once the rust starts it doesn’t stop. While everything is currently just surface rust, if some of these trucks do have metal compound/frame rot issues, they will eventually rot from the inside out. It would be in your best interest to just get a truck from your area that is in better shape and regardless of where you live, I would undercoat it or spray it with fluid film or both.

Any pics of the underside of your truck? I haven’t heard of frame/rust issues with the 3rd gens.

No current pics, just from when I undercoated shortly after buying the truck. The control arms, leafs, diff, springs, factory skid and everything else I didn’t coat with undercoating all have rust on them. I wash the truck pretty frequently, and hose out/ power wash the undercarriage pretty well. I honestly don’t think my 03 was that bad that fast and I bought it used with ~35k on it, and they had rot issues.

As for it being on the campaign list I found a thread with people claiming Toyota is saying certain 16-17’s have issues. Mine was a very early 17 and purchased in 2016. However I don’t think it was on a Toyota Bulletin when I read about it, so I took it with a grain of salt (pun not intended). I’m trying to dig up the thread

I would definitely be concerned. Especially if you are looking for it to last for a while.

If the price is right it wouldn't bother me , you can clean the engine bay up . You should put it on their lift and take a hard look at it , should be fine .

I just upgraded from Sr access cab 4cyl to double cab sr5 v6. In my own opinion, the v6 drives soooo much better. Be sure to take long test drives of both engines to see what you would like. And I'm getting better gas mileage with the v6 too.

Oh my God, that is nothing to worry about at all. Those hose clamps can be replaced with shiny new ones for $5 each. Don't give it a second thought.

I think its more of a issue of "if the hose clamps are rusted, what else is also rusted"

It’s not the clamps I would be worried about. If they are that bad the underneath must be really bad.

My clamps don’t have any rust and the underside doesn’t look to good, luckily I did undercoat most of my frame and the sheet metal.
