Just to give an update regarding status of vehicle. Bought 2 second gens since my first post, 4th gen 4runner, and now I have a GX470. The tacomas have been phenomenal vehicles but they still lack the general fun factor of taking the top off and having solid axles in the front when rock crawling. Will hopefully get to a point where I own both the taco and a JLU Rubicon but that may be a while from now.

The answer is both! I have a '16 Tacoma and a '98 Wrangler TJ. Drive the Tacoma in the Winter and trips, the Wrangler in the Summer. Modern Jeeps don't interest me at all with decreasing reliability and increasing costs compared to the ultra-reliable 4.0L straight 6 of the TJ. Tacoma is dead reliable and its longer wheelbase works well on the icy paved roads I travel daily in the Winter

Ive owned both.. I had a second gen that I absolutely loved and miss it regularly.. I now have a 12 JKU and love it as well. Its been such a great vehicle and hasnt given me a single problem. My wife and kids love that we can drop the doors off and head to the beach.

The reason I made the switch was because of room. The double cab tacoma wasnt as roomy on the interior as the 4dr wrangler.. plus Jeep is one of the last remaning vehicles to offer manual transmission and a manual transfer case.. my tacoma 4wd selector was a nightmare if I ever went into 4lo

I don't understand where everyone is getting this idea that the newer ones are just breaking down on every corner, but it's not really justified. The biggest issue was that about 720 of them needed to be recalled for a weld issue. Yes, that was a huge deal to those 720 owners I'm sure, but otherwise the new ones aren't bad. Toyota had a massive frame rust issue comparatively. I have an 06 LJ which is still the I6, but I wouldn't hesitate to get a new Jeep. Love my Taco and my Jeep though. They both great vehicles though, and I agree, Jeeps for short summer drives and Taco for everything else.

That doesn't really roll off the tongue easy.

What a stupid rivalry some Toyota owners have with Jeep.

    So. Many. Stickers.
I miss my 06 LJ. manual 6 speed was a blast. Damn thing couldn't drive on the highway though, despite three different dealerships going through the front suspension and steering. Had to lose it for safety's sake.

I've got minor personal gripes about all iterations of Toyota trucks, but by far they are feats of superior engineering, especially compared to the junk Jeep is putting out.

JLU Rubicon's are cool, if you've got $55,000.....

Here I am, a jeep guy hanging out with a bunch of Toyota guys.. The rivalry doesnt have to exist.. A good old fashioned shit talk sesh doesnt hurt my feelings though haha.

Ive put 65k on my jeep, sitting around 110k miles and havent changed anything other than the fluids and the starter. Lots of mods, but nothing has broken that wasnt a direct result of my stupidity haha.

Yup that sucks about your LJ, I've got the same 06 LJ 6 speed, but it'll hit the highway fine. I have the metalcloak 3.5" lift and some 33's and me and a buddy lifted it and aligned it with no issue. In general though I agree, Toyota is higher quality.

    Sorry, but Jeeps are junk.

I agree with you that mechanically speaking they are not nearly as bad as Toyota owners think they are. But I had major steering parts wear out after 10,000 miles, body parts come from the factory completely loose or misaligned, all sorts of rattles, squeaks and annoyances develop after only a few thousand miles from driving off the lot. And they drive like shit at freeway speeds.

That may not seem like anything too serious, but it is when you are paying $50,000 or $60,000 for one, and then the dealer treats you like dirt.

Now if you find a good deal on a used one and wheel the crap out of it, that makes for a completely different value proposition, and one that is well worth it IMO.

Toyota is a great vehicle if youre going to daily drive it and have it heavily modded..

My jeep is fine in town (a little clunky and drives like a dump truck) but it requires all hands on deck when youre driving on the interstate haha. Im lifted 4", 4.88 gears, and 35s..

I havent seen a 60k jeep (besides the marked up new Gladiators)???

I bought my 12 slightly used for 25k and yes, its not a long distance interstate car, but it gets where i need it to go mostly comfortably. Gonna drive it to texas in a month or two.. I will report back

Yeah but good shit talk sessions are funny. Just going on a Tacoma forum and bashing another brand with nothing more than an acronym that doesn't even sound that good so you can go "jeep sucks hur dur amirite guys?!?!" is boring. I've got 80k problem free miles on my Jeep. I know lots of JK/JL guys with 80-100k+ problem free miles on their Jeeps. So if you're gonna bash just make it funny is all I'm saying.

Not you @Dangerdave the original guy

I bought a stunningly gorgeous, fully equipped used 2015 JKU Sahara in Tank green with Saddle leather interior, with 5,000 miles for $34,000. Put a 2” Mopar lift, 34” KO2s, a Zeon winch, and drove it for three years without a glitch. I still kick myself for trading it in for a new $52,000 2018 JKU Rubicon Recon that turned into a rattle can by 5,000 miles.

You should see the stickers on JLs: $55,000 for a Sahara; $60,000 for a Moab or a fully equipped Rubicon.

    I’d agree with that one.

My only reason for the switch was a larger interior and manual transmission and transfer case.

I’m a manual transmission guy. I’ll only drive manual as long as they still make them.. the Tacoma manual was really clunky feeling and didn’t shift to my liking
