We entered Canyonlands along the White Rim Trail from BLM land where OHV’s are allowed and the sign at the entrance was pretty clear, though it was 20? miles of dirt from the nearest paved road or ranger station. We saw lots of 4wd’s and dual sport motorcycles on the White Rim over 4 days but no OHV ‘s, so compliance seems pretty good. Though we did see two NPS ranger vehicles ... a Grand Cherokee and an F150, I think. The grass is always greener somewhere else, but as a lifelong Californian I do feel that compliance with these kinds of regulations is worse here than in other parts of the mountain West.

:bikewhoops: Good to see you back Nick. It's tough getting the family out there or anywhere as the kids get older. Although we did get in a trip through Sedona, AZ and Grand Canyon on spring break. I'm sure your girls are a lot bigger now. Mine are about to become teenagers.. I'm hoping for a trip back to DV next spring.

Thank you for resharing this. I looked back and found that, Paul posted it six years ago, on page 10. :D It's a solid story, and well written. I reread some of it today, and I very much enjoy Tom's story, his choice of writing style, & minimalist site. Makes me want to return to DV even more. Thanks!!!

Holy crap, that was quite a read. I'd heard about the Germans but never really thought about it after hearing they were missing. Sad story and I'm glad someone was able to bring about some closure. And I 100% understand the reluctance of any police department to release info that is not public-even when it would help non-sworn folks finish the job they started. I've experienced a similar reaction to information shared and questions I've asked. It just seems that the SO would try to help SAR.

Great but sad story of amazing perseverance to go back multiple times to find answers. Also important lesson about not letting common sense get overridden by rash decisions driven by short term objectives.

I’ve heard several times about the missing Germans on DV talk and other places but this is first time I read that there was a resolution to the story however sad.

Might depend on how many times the SO got his butt chewed for talking too much.

Not so much chewed out but controlling the flow of privileged information.

There was an interesting lesson about what it takes to tackle a SAR mission. The importance of understanding as much as you can before starting.

The perfect place to finish this book. Looking far off to the South I could imagine the events taking place. A great read for those interested in DV and California history.
