The best part of this whole damn thing is that he repeatedly slams older Tacoma models as having similar problems.

Undeterred by these repeated claims (with backing links no less) an inbred flock of idiots descend into this thread, skims the poor guy's website..... and then declares it a third gen problem.

All of these issues used to be normal on an off road vehicle in some hard circumstances but Off Road vehicles didn't used to be 40K+ luxury cars with big tires.

If I wanted to go off road, I'd buy a second hand older truck, beat it to hell and not care.

All problems are 3rd Gen problems. Well, until the 4th Gen drops . . .

Then, the 4.0 and 3.5 crews are gonna have a come to geebus meeting.

Marketing and lawyers are a hell of a combo. This is not a Toyota thing; most all manufacturers engage in this kind of trickery. They will market you a product (be it a truck, lawn mower, or clothes washer) that LOOKS (fancy colors/shapes/materials) like it should do more than they are willing to warranty for. Many people assume that because there is a 'warranty' (that they never fully read and understand), they are safe and protected against loss. It is what the manufacturers DONT say that people should pay attention to. I tell my kids this all the time. As a consumer of any goods, you have to change the way you think about what you are buying. Ask the questions and do the research as it applies to you and your particular usage. If you don't see a clear answer, it is likely 'not covered'. For me, my Tacoma will never see that kind of water or that kind of climb angle. If I was going to need that kind of performance, I would build it. The downside risk to a $35-40K vehicle is just too high.

When I brought that up to him, this was his response to me .

"Yup first post was a guess.

I recently went back to the photos, measured the same level on my wheels - and got 9-10 inches. You included the photo of the water ford in your comment - what does it look like to you?

I'm not sure what your point isthough?"

FWIW ladies, I used to own a 2014 JKU. I never experienced the engine smoking on steep inclines, but we had a lot of auto trannies shutting themselves down on steep inclines. Common problem.....

But hey, this is a third gen problem...and Toyotas are pieces of shit....specifically 3rd gen Toyotas with car engines.....remember?

But a fucking Jeep never had an engine smoking while on an incline......

    Wait....uh oh..lookie here:

    https://wayalife.com/showthread.php/53834-White-Smoke-When-going-up-incline

Read the 4th post....then hang your heads in shame.

I could go on all day with these links.....stupid Toyota.

    https://www.jkowners.com/forum/stock-jk-tech-dept/90432-smoking-steep-inclines-2012-jkur.html

Let me let you fucking hammer heads in on a little secret - even land rovers smoke on steep inclines. Don't make me rub your faces in that pile of dog shit as well.

    Moderators:

Can we get the third gen forum renamed...my vote is for "The Constantly on the Rag Forum."

Or the Forum for Terminal Whiners and Hand Wringers.

    Yeeesh.

When I was in high-school we called guys like this “whiney lil’ bitches”. That is no longer appropriate, these days, unfortunately. The constructive shaming that went along with being called-out on your whining was actually good for the lil’ bitches, I reckon.

Every time I see those scenarios I go
Tacoma is a TRUCK designed for:
    - towing
    - hauling
    - work
and not off-roading and rock climbing.
OFF ROAD means off the paved road, like a farm road, dirt road, access road and not fording rivers, climbing mountains, crawling boulders.
Blaming Tacoma for not being an Off Road truck is like blaming Corvette for not being NASCAR ready.

Toyota sold out to physics with the turd gen. Before 2016, they were using highly advanced Japanese space magic in their vehicles. I read about it on YouTube

I agree that MANY vehicles will exhibit the same smoking behavior. The issue to me is the oil pressure drop or if it is eating enough oil to hydro-lock. The issue in Jeeps appears to be PCV related from what I saw, which can be fixed with a catch can, but I did not see that there was any oil pressure drop. I hope that's the case here as it is an easy fix, but it is starting to look like valve guide seals leaking due to lack adequate oil return in our trucks. If that is the case, I view that as a design flaw. I understand smoking on a longer duration steep hill climb. I don't expect an engine to grenade though.

Ive been through much steeper climbs than any of those he mentioned, except for the marlin crawler one, and never smoked. @Toyo4x4OG has been up them too along with big Rick and we never had any of those smoking problems. 2 weeks ago I was going through muddy water splashing around and covering my tires with no problem. This guy probably got a lemon or something.

I understand your point, but totally disagree.

Whether or not you think Tacomas are a good choice for the activities, Crawl Control and MutliTerrain Select are specifically intended for off road use, by Toyota, no question. There is a “loose Rock, Rock, Sand, Mogul” settings etc in MTS. Crawl Control has no use whatsoever on an access road or farm track. It is only useful driving well off road in extremely steep or challenging situations.

In my personal experience, the Tacoma is absolutely great Offroad, in all the situations you describe, within the limitations of it being a pickup truck with bad approach and departure angles, and limited ground clearance.

That is a possibility too. Kia/Hyandai just had that big engine recall (not that I am making that comparison to Toyota). If I remember right, there were machining shavings not flushed out of the motor and it would stop oil flow. It is possible that a few motors had some kind of similar issue. The smoking issue and low oil pressure/engine damage are not necessarily related. They may be, but we don't have evidence to say that right now.
