Very interesting, everyone seemed to point the finger at the 3rd gen being a turd, so its not only the this engine but the IforceV8 has the same desing flaw to.

Anyone care to sum up whats up with this issue? Having a hard time reading through 20 pages.... Basically I wanna know if this can be recreated in the shop or on an extremely high grade

    Thanks

On a steep incline there isnt enough flow volume at the back of the heads for oil to flow back down into the motor without filling up the top of the heads to the point of oil getting sucked into the PCV system.

Id imagine a pretty easy solution would be to pipe in a line from the back of the head to the bottom of the oil pan. Couple of brass fittings and proper pipe.

My question is, is it starving the motor of oil? can you get away with doing this once and awhile and not damaging anything?

When I lived in Arizona, this would be a huge problem, and probably a deal breaker for me, but im in Florida now, and not so much of a hardcore wheeler anymore, hence the reason I bought a Sport.

Thought I'd post an update on my experience (quoted below for reference). First, a photo of the truck shortly before it started smoking.

    Image from iOS.jpg

Two days after this hill climb I started towing my Airstream (3500lb GVWR) with the Taco and the engine blew after 75 miles. The engine had 3420 miles on it, properly broken in.

I towed the truck to the dealership, and now they are refusing to cover the truck under warranty. They're saying there was water damage (though they haven't opened up the engine). I did take the Taco through about 20 inches of water earlier that day - but no smoke, stuttering, loss of power, etc. Waiting to understand more specifically what evidence they have of water intrusion.

I bought this truck to be a reliable off-roader, and now even if I do get the engine replaced under warranty I'm terrified to use it to climb hills or ford small streams. Man, this really sucks. I don't know what to do with the truck.

Has anyone had to deal with a warranty dispute before? Now I need to figure out what my options are...

Sounds like you need to wait and see if it hydrolocked. I'm no expert but they have to prove it. At least that's what I would say. 20 inches is a lot but the taco should be able to handle that. Shit, my tires got to be like 2 foot. You sure it was only 20 inches? From what I know you'd have to be up to mid fender where the air box is. Maybe an expert will chime in soon

BTW I would wait for Toyota to prove it was water damage. They can't say it is just by looking at it imo. Also, worse case maybe go thru your car insurance?

I can't imagine it was hydrolocked since I drove for ~200 miles afterwards. My buddy just sent me a photo of the water ford. Other than splashes & bow wave, water was about 20" deep and came partially up the tire.

Man this is a bummer - I can't understand how anyone successfully off-roads a tacoma when shallow water and hill climbs are such an issue.

I'm really curious what happened here. It doesn't seem you hydrolocked and there's no way that incline grenaded your motor.

What did the motor oil look like after it blew? What do you mean by blew by the way? Like completely seized, spun a bearing or detonated?
    Also when did it happen??

If that’s the water you went through, water could of easily been sucked into the air box by driving fast through that. Dealership probably simply opened the air box up and seen water and mud in it. All they need to deny your warranty claim

Damn, the smoking while going uphill and the hydrolocking on a small amount of water is disappointing, considering all the advertising Toyota does about these trucks being made for "off road". My previous 11' JKU Rubi had some other problems, but it never smoked going uphill and it never hydrolocked going through a little water, I wonder how the new JL's are?

Maybe, but you can’t hydrolock an engine 200 miles after you went through the water.

True, but you also can’t believe everything you read off the internet. Also like I already stated, if the dealer sees any signs of water and dirt, especially past the filter they will just automatically assume it was most likely the cause. They get paid a lot more and better for a customer pay engine job than a warranty one
