I have developed a habit (3x’s now) of letting the clutch out after not fully engaging 1st gear.
I feel the first “notch” and let the clutch out, when the gear exists just a small amount of pressure beyond that.
The truck makes a light grinding noise and I feel like I might be sick. I will do my best to never have it happen again, but I said that to myself the first time it happened!
How much damage, if any, is this causing? Thank you.

Grinding gears is never a good thing but if its happened a couple times, it's fine. Just don't make it a habit. No reason to race shift it. Pull out of gear with the clutch pushed in, put it in second and let the clutch out. It's simple.

You are not actually grinding gears, it is just the noses of the syncros and dog ring interacting. It is not a real problem unless it happens all the time.

Note that 1st and 2nd have triple syncros, so it can sometimes trick you by feeling a bit notchy. The accumulator doesn't help either:

Time #6 costs you your man card

#8 and the vehicle won't start for 48 hours. 'Time out' so to speak. Controlled by the 'smart key'.

Even dozen, the vehicle is repossessed.

    Just kidding.

    Be aware, keep practicing.

This is from Nuetral to 1st. Simply not pushing the shifter into gear hard enough.

It happens, normal part of operating a manual. I've been driving one for over 12 years and it still happens from time to time. Hand slips off the shifter knob, foot slips off the clutch pedal, trying to shift too quickly, etc. Just don't force it if you feel it grind.

Keep breaking it in also. I noticed the OP has a 2019.

2nd through 6th felt very different after a few thousand miles. 1st was still breaking in after 10k. At over 20k now, it continues to get smoother and smoother to what was a slick shifter from Day 1, IMO.

I was gonna say this sounds like the legendary ‘shifter not pushed all the way into gear’ issue.

Or just going to fast between shifting and foot movement. Happens.

Some of us have swapped over to Redline MT90, and the Ford Motocraft MT fluid (I don't recall the full name) was highly recommended also. I know that MT90 fixed a really bad N to 1st issue on our old Saab. It also improved the Taco.

Gen 1, 1.5 and maybe 2 Miatas had truck transmissions out of the parts bin. Changing the trans fluid to Redline was the rage with the autox crowd until the advent of Ford's XT-M5-QS.

A true GL4 and synthetic, it turned that 1-2 and 2-1 notchiness to a buttery snick snick. Combined with a shortened shifter (different than a 'short shifter') and a heavy shift knob, it was driving joy.

Thanks fellas. I love the truck, but am definitely getting “fooled” by the triple synchros in 1st. It feels like it’s in gear...early morning, in a hurry, some ass honking behind you, etc ...then rzzzzzz - grind noise.

I have never heard that about the Miata gearboxes. I did get to take an NA for spin once. Well used and just freaking stellar. I always wanted one and even tried to talk my 15yr old into a cheap NB. No dice, yet. If I ever get a roomy garage / shop, I will have one.

Spend some time over on Miata.net to whet your appetite some more.

Eye candy. Well, to me anyway.

    No! TW is bad enough.

Definitely eye candy, esp in that green. The dark blue was hotness also.

Buddy had one at work when I was stationed in Hawaii. That thing was hilariously loud and clunky, but he loved it until it eventually toasted itself. I never understood the draw of them, but they’re supposedly the ultimate drivers car.

There's a butt for every seat. The Miata might not have been yours? That's life, right?

Loud as in engine or wind? Because if it was engine loud and clunky, then I got nothing other than abuse? But, they were pretty indestructible. I know a lot of folks with them and really nothing bad to say. One guy had two because one was stolen, then recovered a long time later.

Other than Kyle there, do not drive one. :D At the time I drove one, we already had an MT convertible. So, I didn't catch the flu too bad esp as we needed four seats. Now, two seats could work.

You just can't go wrong IMO. Seeing the new ones buzzing around, esp the RF, they just look goood.
