It might not work well with the roll up tonneau bar on top of the rail. I probably need to go with the OEM roof rack. I have some Thule ski racks that would work with that (I have the Yakima bars and rack, as well, just not the risers). The roof rack lets me throw my boots under the tonneau, I guess.

How big are those kayaks you have loaded? If you had a longer kayak would that still work?

They’re 10 feet. A bigger one would fit just fine but I would be more cautious while driving. I can drive 70MPH+ just fine without any issues but I think any bigger one you’d have to drive slower and take it easier.

Agreed. It is one or the other. For me, I only use the tonneau during the rainy season.

I wanted to ask @walterj about that from his pic on the last page. How long did it take you to stop worrying about not seeing the boats when rolling down the road? We had a fork mount roof bike rack many years ago and never really worried, but the bikes were seriously locked in. That was proven driving into the garage once. Thankfully, it was just a seat post that got bent.

Of course, screwing up the straps in the bed ends with the same result. But, I did install cleats on my boat and use a backup bungee through the deck bungees just in case.

I do this. Just took a 12' and a 14' on an 1800km road trip. Just tied them down with a bunch of straps and made sure they couldn't fall out the back. Worked like a charm.

The boats are only ~35lbs so I just toss them up from next to the driver's door.

I can see the shadow of the boats over the windshield. They are pretty secure in those racks - but if I'm feeling paranoid I can lean forward and look up.

    Good stuff.

My storage hoist feels secure about slipping also. I'm sure that I would get used to it.

THANK YOU!! Have been on a deep dive researching solutions for tonneau / ladder rack combos until my eyes bled. I never really considered a lower rack until I saw your post! I even think that my wife's SUP will fit nicely between the kayaks. All hail the RustyTaco

I do not at the moment. I may go out kayaking this weekend so I’ll post some if I do. The kayaks stick out roughly 3.5” from the bed. I’ll update once I get some side pictures though.

Wanted to carry two 10 foot kayaks and two mountain bikes also pulling a small trailer and still have room in the bed. 2017 off-road 5ft bed. Haven’t hit highway speeds yet... should be soon

Popojijo, I like that rack set up also, and the nice K. Ghia in the garage.

It a Frankenstein of sorts... I purchased the J-hooks and bars from E-trailer.com. I originally intended on mounting the kayak carriers on top of a pop-up tent trailer but thought differently after not be able to come up with a good way to mount without compromising the roof. I had a really sharp guy help figure out how to make brackets that would utilize the Tacoma bed rail system in the way you see. he drew them up and I had a machine shop water jet and bend the brackets, Purchased the hardware at Mcmaster carr, Also added another rail up front to attach two mountain bike forks. probably could have found a cheaper solution but probably not near as fun to design, build and install.
