    Hey ya'll,

I was at a Overlanding rally and was tinkering with my new truck with some experts and learned something I didn't know! (I read the manual, cover to cover, I swear)

My previous understanding was that the traction control goes off, and remains off when in 4-lo. I thought that the terrain select was ONLY applicable if you were using the crawl control.

Turns out, when in 4-lo, if you use the terrain select to tell the computer what you are running on, the traction control will activate, and kick some serious Toyota ass.

Another thing I learned regarding traction control that I will throw in here is that you should stay steady on the gas while the truck is struggling a little to give the computer a chance to figure out what's going on. If you are off/on the gas, it can't really make great adjustments. If, after holding it steady you are just bouncing or digging, then give it up, but make sure to give the computer a chance to work.

    Happy trails fools!!!

Well probably not everyone knows, but the sticky should mean that anybody who wants to know can...

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-traction-control-modes-explained.530695/

    An interesting point
Pro and OR default to traction OFF in 4lo.
All other models default to traction ON in 4lo

I read through that page while I was in line for the technical course. Am I a complete moron, or does it not say in there that you can turn it on by selecting the terrain?
It even seems to clearly state that the traction control is not available on my trim, which i found to be extremely confusing.

    Correct

In SR/SR5/Sport/Limited, it defaults on and can be turned off in 4Lo

In OR/Pro automatics, it defaults off and can be turned on with MTS

In OR/Pro manuals, it defaults to the ATrac button, which is a latching switch (remembers setting)

just read through it again and it's still even looks to me like y

Thanks, but looking at that stickied graph, it reads to me like traction control never operates in 4-lo on the auto OR/PRO's, but you are confirming what I think I learned, that I can engage it in 4-lo by flipping the MTS?

    thanks!!!

That is because 'Trac' isnt available in 4lo on the OR/Pro, so it ie grayed out

However MTS is available, as you have found.

The auto OR/Pro in 4lo has all these options circled.. try them all out and read the descriptions (not that they are very good)

Reading that chart...once you activate rear diff lock, then front diff is completely OPEN with no traction control?

I've studies the shit out of this graph already.

When you are in 4-lo, and select a terrain, the "TRAC OFF" light goes out, which makes us think traction control in working.

    Toyota should explain this better.

If on OR/Pro you ONLY have rear diff locked in 4lo. If you want anything on the front, um you need to do MTS or ATrac or Crawl Control in addition to rear locker

When you realize that MTS is really just traction control called something different, all should become clear. MTS is simply different levels of TC, (although I believe it does change throttle response as well.)
