Wow, how many times has it been said that the clutch must me fully depressed for manual and neutral for automatics. The sun visor card and owners manual says so, too. Anyway, glad the drama is over. Toyota is #1.

Turns out, sometimes, to go from 4hi to 4lo, not only does the clutch have to be depressed, but you have to reclutch between. Or, in other words, you can't go from 2hi to 4lo (or vice versa) without releasing the clutch at least once.

Well...if I was smart I would have read this before doing anything else. This clearly states that the clutch pedal needs to be depressed all the way (#5.2). Sorry for wasting everyone’s time. I had a Gen 1 4000 miles ago which was more crude and more basic, but definitely more straightforward...easier in many ways.

I didn’t know you could still be moving (up to 2mph) with a MT and be able to switch between 4H to 4L. With an AT, you definitely can’t do that.

That was David K’s post- have you seen his Baja trip guides he publishes? Lots of experience off roading down there.

When I've needed to get into 4Lo, being stopped has been reliable for me. Any motion just resulted in beeping. The threshold should be higher.

You would think that something like neutral / clutch in and a 5 to 10mph would be just fine? Maybe with the added requirement of 0% throttle / right foot off of it completely?

Oh jesh, it sounds like you have to just triple push all three pedals like I had to do with my first car to keep it from stalling while coming to a stop.

I'd be willing to dance around if that limit was higher. It is a minor nuisance, but being able to roll at something a bit over walking pace would be perfect.

Our old convertible had a 7mph limit when putting the top down / up. While that was nice, it was barely over idle in 1st gear. Brushing the throttle would stop it. I always dreamt of a 12mph threshold there and was envious of other cars that had upto 30mph limits.

4HI slow speed turns is tough. Feels like the front wheels are locking up.

Just got truck few weeks ago. Trying to put the 10 niles a month in. Have not had time to take out in the desert yet. 4HI isn’t bad on paved roads so long as not turning at low speeds. I feel the front wheels fighting me.

Yeah on my 04 1st gen I can just have the trans in neutral to go into 4lo, no need to push the clutch.. although I can keep it in gear and push the clutch to do the same thing.

Only use 4Hi on straight roads. You don't need to get 10mi in all at once. I do a couple miles on my way to work every Tuesday and Thursday morning in a dead straight section.
