LOL, that South Kaibab was definitely isolated and the only thing we saw were some mules taking supplies down. There's a lot to do at bottom. We picked Phantom Range because we didn't want to hike all our food down. BTW the the breakfast and dinner are awesome and worth the money if you go the Phantom Ranch route.

Here are a couple of pics from the Grand Canyon trip. The first one is of the bridge over the Colorado river to get to Phantom Range and the other was where we stayed while we were down there.

Yeah, I would recommend that. You can go down and up in one day but it's a lot to do. We stayed at the cabins on the south rim and they shuttled us to the South Kaibab trailhead around 5:30 in the morning. We started hiking with headlights, lol. Here's a pic of the only bathroom on the entire trail and the second pic is from somewhere near the start of the Bright Angel trail as we were heading to the top.

I feel like there is a bit of bad advice in here. The trip is over, but I’m sure people might look here for first time advice.

First off buy that trail book. It’s extremely helpful when trying to decide what trails to do. Start with green trails if you’ve never done any off roading before. I have a LT Tacoma with 37’s and I’ll still do green trails for the great scenery.

A lot of those trails are pretty heavily trafficked and not super remote. As long as someone knows where you are going, knows the time you should return, going alone (as in one vehicle not completely alone) is doable. I wouldn’t cancel a trip just because of that. Most of the time you’ll see people on the trail if you get stuck.

Next up. I’ll disagree on some of the first time trails. Fins and things and hells revenge are good for first time Moab people but NOT good for someone that has never gone off road. A completely new to off roading person should really stick to green trails.

Lastly white rim. While this is easy, it’s fairly difficult to do in one day. This is a trail, even though I’ve done it plenty of times alone, I’d prefer to have a second vehicle. It’s about 100 miles round trip so camping halfway through is a much better idea. Jumping into it without much research isn’t the best idea.

Anyway that’s my two cents. :)

Moab isn't really the place I would gravitate to if I've never been offroading before. There are some green trails sure, and if you're in the area, try them out, but I wouldn't make a special trip there solely to wheel without prior experience.

@BalutTaco, drive the tar out of your truck on some local trails first. gain your experience there. Read up on the "going it alone" sticky thread as that has TONS of great advice not just for going out alone, but all that info is good to know, even when traveling in groups.

The other reason to not travel alone isn't about safety and recovery, but about learning new skills. Driving alone from day one is like handing a kid a chess board and some pieces and saying "here, play some chess." They might end up playing something that kinda loosely looks like chess, but they're likely doing it wrong, lol. No, you need someone who knows what they're doing to guide you. Even if they aren't a highly experienced driver, and just another friend, you will bounce ideas off each other and be exposed to ideas you may not have come up with yourself.

If you make a habit of driving alone, you need a winch. This also leads you into the realm of needing at least a front bumper to mount it to, or at least a front hitch receiver to mount it to.

Some random thoughts on recovery gear:

Remember that things like a tow strap is USELESS if you are the only vehicle out there. I've driven up on people who were driving alone and all they had was a strap. :frusty: They're just coming to the realization of "oh, what am I supposed to hook this to?"

A lot of people have a hi-lift jack, and those are super cool and useful, but can be deadly if misused. Also, think about where you're going to lift your vehicle with it. All stock? Good luck lifting the truck on those plastic bumpers, lol. With a hi-lift, it's best if you have steel bumpers and rock sliders.

In the end, get out there, drive, have fun. Take it slow, don't be afraid to get out and look

Heading to the MOAB area, should. There Mid August(14th to the 15th)

It is more of a pass through as a spot to spend the night and the day between Yellowstone and the grand canyon.

Current plan is to stay in or near arches.

Need to check out the book mentioned earlier.

I'll be in Moab starting this Sunday for a week, primarily to fly my paramotor, but if I can find more "dirt road" type trails, and drive out to see some scenery, I'd like to do that. I know I don't know how to "wheel", so I wouldn't want to try anything more than just some basic dirt roads.

Pretty much a “basic dirt road” except for the views, but I’d recommend the Shafer Trail loop from Island in the Sky down to the river and into town. Not “wheeling” but really gives you a feel for the area. Though I suppose you’ll have good views from your aerial rig.
