Hey guys. Looking for suggestions on mounting a compressor either in my bed (exp essentials), or under the hood.

I don't really wanna drop $500 for the ARB dual and I don't care about being the fastest one to fill my tires.... I just want something that works.

Was thinking of even just making my own system with a Viair 88p or something.. and mounting that under the hood. My buddy has the single ARB and the expedition essentials bed mount. I like that, but don't necessarily need it all.

Thoughts, input, pictures? What do you guys run.

While the bigger compressors do generally have higher max pressures and faster fill rates than the smaller compressors, they will also not be working as hard to fill even a stock tire. You won't need to run the thing as close to its duty cycle, which means it will (all else being equal) last longer.

One problem that I don't like about under the hood mounts is the heat. Both your engine and the compressor get hot. Another option is either an IP67 rated compressor (not sure there are many of those), or building some type of enclosed, but vented, box to keep it from the elements and mount it under the bed or in the bed.

This is partly why I opted for a portable 400P. It sits either behind the passenger seat or in a box in my bed. I remove it when needed, put it back when not needed. And I can use it on any of my vehicles. I just got back from a LONG road trip with my 4Runner towing a travel trailer. I brought the compressor with me. Can't do that if I hard mounted it to my Tacoma...

If you're going to hard mount it, might as well go for a full on OBA system like this:
    https://www.viaircorp.com/oba/oba-heavy

then you can run air tools, lockers, tires, anything you want.

Yeah good point about making the lower rated ones work harder, and longer. The single Arb is what I see most frequently out on trails, and I'm sure that would be fine for my application. Heat is an issue under the hood and in the bed, true. I'd just open the hood while it's being used although there's still plenty of heat from the engine, especially after a long hard run.

Dude. I almost bought a 400p. It went for $110 on a local auction page (brand new) and now I'm mad I didn't pull the trigger.

Honestly, I might just buy an ARB single or even a cheap Viair 88p and throw it in a case behind my seat. Just take it out when I need it... everyone else is getting out their tubes anyways, so it's not like that much extra work. lol.

I was *this close* to pulling the trigger on a viair OBA system (the one I linked) a while back. I don't remember what exactly made me go for the 400p instead, but it likely had to do with the thought of starting yet *another* project when I can't even finish the ones I have. Took me several months to put my front bumper together, and another couple months for my sliders. Still haven't finished my skid plates.

that is no where near enough SCFM to run air tools.

the compressor alone, no, but that's why there's an air tank.

I mean, you're not going to be running an air grinder for 30 minutes straight, but it'll run an impact gun for a few seconds.
