Apologize if this is a stupid question but I have zero knowledge of this. But what exactly are the benefits of dual-battery?

The easiest way for me to explain is it's an insurance policy. When stopped camping and not driving, your auxiliary items...fridges, lighting, winch, air compressor will draw from the auxiliary battery leaving your main cranking battery ready and available to start the vehicle...as you drive, a solenoid switches on and off to manage the charging of both batteries.

This is what you're afraid of: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/engine-oil-fill-spout-on-truck.505419/

For what it's worth, I have the same dual battery kit as @aaen, (who posted that thread) and so far have not had that problem. I've had the kit installed roughly 1.5 years.

I have this setup with Odyssey 34-1500 batteries. Clearance is tight but manageable. The only thing I don’t like about it is cutting the perfectly good fuse box clip. Other than that the setup is solid. Genesis recently upgraded from rubber wellnuts to steel ones so torqueing them down is a none issue now. It took me two hours for the install but probably could have done it in 45 minutes if I minus beer breaks!

@foxrcing07 @Uphillshunter any thoughts on this dual battery setup? I'm no electrician/electrical engineer. Other than installing a simple ditch light I won't know the first thing about installing something like this.

You can rig up a solar panel to these too so you can charge them at rest..

STOP TEMPTING ME!!! I just don't know if I like those connectors to be all willy nilly like that. I've seen some others with a panel mounted on top of the fuse box, etc.

Any updates on your experience with the dual battery tray? Any problems with rubbing on the oil filler neck?

I will probably put something in between there to eliminate rubbing. Maybe some heatshield or something.

You're going to break your oil filler neck if you use it off road. Your engine will shift around each time you go over a bump and eventually it will snap it and oil will dump everywhere.

I'm speaking from experience on this.

In my case, I occasionally off-road solo and got tired of hauling a battery pack. I installed a group 34 AGM battery on the passenger side between the washer fluid and ABS module. A dual battery install need not be complex and expensive. In it's simplest form, all you need is an on/off battery switch (see Deep Sea 6006 or similar) between the positive posts. When car is running, you flip the switch on; when car is turned off, you flip the switch off. You 'isolate' the batteries when the car is off because a weaker battery will draw power from a stronger battery, leading to a shortened battery life of the stronger battery. A weaker battery also stresses the alternator.

I, too, am not a fan of the side-by-side battery system in the Tacoma. The left side is already heavy with the gas tank, driver, steering mechanism, and primary battery; there is no good reason to add more weight.

Anyone interested in the buying this from me? Decided to go another route for my dual-battery setup.

Pretty much selling it for however much I paid from eBay.

I have no affiliation with Genesis but their dual battery system has caused two issues on my buddy's Tacoma while we were out on trips together, both of which caused fluid leaks as follows...

May 2018. Genesis Dual battery system installed.

March 2019. Oil filler neck broken due to Genesis Dual battery system too close to engine. (We plugged the valve cover temporarily with the positive terminal cap cover, at least that part of the system was useful).

July 2019. Hole in radiator due to cracked wheel well support in 3 places from the weight and mounting of the Genesis Dual Battery system.

This is why I didn’t go this route, I did single 27F AGM. That’s too much weight in the corner combined with very limited clearance is no good. There is a company out there, can’t remember who, that makes a new filler that relocates to clear the batteries. It would be nice if Genesis would make it with 25 group size to aid in reduction of weight and generate a little more clearance, or get on the band wagon and make a separate mount for passenger side.

Just a heads up over the weekend my oil neck was snapped on a trail..we took sometime making a trail fix, when we figured out the screw cap on the neck fits the bottom hole as well..not sure if it was engineered to fit but it was a life saver.image000003.jpg
