Will Rivnuts work on double cab roof?

I stripped or somehow crossthreaded my original holes, will rivnuts/nutserts work? They do on the access cab but it seems like the double cab is thicker material.

 

Better idea would be retap the threads. Stock is 6mm x 1.0 if it just won't start. If the bolt goes all the way in but spins without grabbing go up a size either metric or standard. The nuts are welded to the inside surface of the roof so drilling a hole large enough to use rivnuts would be a pain. Alternatively you could drop the edge of the head liner and use a wrench to install a nylock nut.

 

I tried 1/4×20 and somehow the holes are still too big... 8mm is the next up but won't fit my spacers for the rack.

I did drill already and fit 6m nutserts in...however some of them will spin when almost tightened all the way down...

 

I used Rivnuts for my light bar install on my 06 DCSB. No problems yet.

 

Assuming you use the proper rivet nut. Also assuming you drill the hole where the roof is reinforced. Yes it works fine.

 

If the material is too thin to grab it needs a backing washer to thicken it. I permanently mounted ditch tracks so I could have removeable racks mounted with slot nuts. The ditch channels are the thickest part of the roof(4 or more layers of sheet steel). I also dropped the head liner so that I could use a wrench.

 

The problem is trying to install a rivnut where the stock threaded hole is. That area is actually thicker than the overlapping layers of sheet metal in the rest of the drip channel because of the actual threading. You can force one in there and it’ll mushroom out to be tight, but it’ll be friction fit at best and you’ll have to use caution when threading in your hardware or it’ll pull out. At that point, it’s also not doing anything as an attachment point and would be more for the aesthetics of the missing bolt head on the installed rack than anything. TBH your rack will be fine with one bolt missing and it won’t compromise the integrity of the rack and your use of it.

If you were really set on fixing your error though, the best course of action would be to use a helicoil. It’s a threaded insert of “threads”. You tap out to a larger size, insert the coil and in inside of the coil is your repaired threads. I’m honestly surprised more people don’t know about this:

so i just eventually had to partially take liner off and add washer + nut.
