This is a great example of when TIG welding wins over MIG welding.

Also notice that this welding was done on the shop welding bench.

I'll admit that TIG has a place when welding on our trucks, but there is a lot more MIG welding situations in most cases.

I wasn't buying the random wire size idea.

Just to make sure, you didn't have flux core wire in the machine and then switch to solid core welding wire?

Going from one to the other requires a change in polarity on the welding leads.

This is a pretty critical part and i wouldn't trust myself to mig weld them lol. So I turned to a true professional that is proven to be able to do stuff like this and handle anything I can throw at it. Hes a lead fabricator in formula drift and also a Tacoma guy.

I’ve had an Eastwood 40amp machine for 3 years or so, I don’t take care of it at all and it runs great. I generally only use it for demo, but it’s worked great and I run it with cheap eBay consumables. I had a miller 375 before that and feel like the Eastwood cuts just as good, it’s just not as nicely made. I currently have a hypertherm on my plasma table and I could see myself upgrading that long before I’d buy something to replace the Eastwood. For the money it’s tough to beat, and I’ve always had good dealings with them as a company.

nope, it is an off brand hardware store wire, but thats been in there since i got it new. But i may swap that out based on the recommendations here. Its flux core wire, i havent had solid wire in the machine. Thanks for the tips everyone!

Been watching both for awhile. Going to be cutting a lot of metal here shortly and not looking forward to doing it with a cut off wheel.. Guess I'm just getting impatient lol.
Ive been eyeing eastwood machines as well... Whats the max thickness you've cut with it and hows the duty cycle? Ultimately i would like a hyerptherm but can't justify the cost of one unless i get a plasma table.

I’ve cut half inch with it. Not a bunch but a few times for random repair work. As far as duty cycle I couldn’t tell you. I haven’t overheated it and I haven’t used it with any regard for its safety. For the most part I use it to remove cam tabs, shock mounts, and frame rivets, and rip full sheet of plate to put on the cnc. When I bought it, it had been a few years since I had a plasma. I bought it figuring I’d use it for a few months and replace it with something nicer. I’ve bought a lot of tools since then and really haven’t felt the need to upgrade it. With that said I don’t use it everyday or even every week. If it played a bigger role in my work I would of sprung for something a little more fancy.

Where are you in GA? Might need to hit you up sometime if I need something done that requires more than the lowgrade buggers I can muster.

I noticed that I would get some weird sputtering when I let my gun tip get too close to the work piece.

@wilcam47 Since you're using fluxcore, sickout needs to be 3/4 - 1 inch.
