had anyone replaced the basic red third brake light with one that has LED lights as well? My dealer said that I would not be able to swap mine out for an OEM Toyota light that some Tacoma’s have.
    Thanks

    Welcome to TW!

Yeah, lots of people have switched to MESOs third brake light. But, I personally don’t know of any aftermarket or Toyota LED third brake lights that are known to work well.

I wanted bed lights so I made my own, but it doesn’t look sexy like the ones @MESO makes. Some day I’ll upgrade.

Do you have a Double Cab or Access Cab?

FWIW, I believe that the 3rd gen Access Cab uses the 2nd gen 3rd brake light.

Do you have a double cab or access cab? IF it is a 3rd gen 2016 + Access cab, then you can use a 2nd gen LED third brake light. Here's an example.

I first looked at the light I referenced above a couple months ago.

Amazon has several vendors showing what seems to be the same light, in a Red, Smoked, or Black version.

Among the different ads, they seem to use the same stock photos, with a hodgepodge of conflicting descriptions.

Anyway, I did a coin toss and ordered one. Will report back when I get it.

I received the new light yesterday. It looks to be of decent quality, and is packaged well.

When I ordered it, it was called Chrome/Red. There is no chrome.

It came with a bag of goodies, but from comments in the ad, and my observations it looks like it will be plug and play.

I will be putting this on a 2019 SR5 ACCESS CAB. The ad and the box clearly state that it is for 1995 - 2015 Toyota Tacomas.

Everything I've read said that the Gen 3 ACCESS CAB uses the same third brake light as the Gen 2. It will NOT work for a Gen 3 Double Cab.

I'll start another thread when I get around to installing it.

What do you want to accomplish?

If you just want a clear lens with LED brake lights, either get a complete unit from eBay for 2nd gen Tacos like Tullie is doing, or just buy a Klearz lens and red LED 194 bulbs for the stock housing. The complete unit requires scraping off the OEM adhesive gasket from the painted cab surface, but is cheaper.

If you want bed lights, you'd need to drop the headliner and run wires to the light.

I really wish the double cabs could be replaced from the outside. I had to take mine in due to weird interior cracks and it took them 6 hours to replace the thing, luckily it was under warranty.

On an access cab you don’t have to drop the headliner, it’s very easy to fish a wire from the dome light to the brake light.493B530E-3EBE-40D7-97C6-0E0723C7FFE6.jpgF0B8628A-9E36-4FF0-8707-04A0E65D246B.jpg

Captqc, Thanks for posting that photo with the brake light removed. Looks like I should be able to use the original hardware easily. The new light came with a new gasket. I guess getting the old gasket off will be the toughest part, but Goo-Gone should be up to it.
