Alright, so I went solar about a year ago. Now, I have pigeons who have decided that they can roost and live up there. Partially thanks to my neighbor who feeds raccoons, pigeons and pretty much all wildlife who shows up at his door. The dogs do a good job of keeping the ground rats out of the yard, but they can't affect the flying rats 2 stories up. Me and the dog go play fetch in the morning and afternoon/evening where I throw the ball on the roof and then get her to "GIVE" the ball so I can repeat until they fly away. Not long term solution, obviously.
I sprayed some kind of shit that was supposed to make them irritated and go away early in the week, but that did nothing. It is "apparently" illegal to shoot at them within city limit (fucking laws, lol). I need to find a solution to eliminate these disease ridden fucks. Wondering if anybody on the vast and knowledgeable TW has any viable ideas to rid these shit mongers off that doesn't "apparently" involve direct killing of them (which, don't get me wrong, I am all for). But I don't live out in the sticks where vigilante justice would be obviously the best solution.
I have started a defense plan which involves some kind of permanent skirting or barrier around the base of the panels. But I haven't really seen any fixes out there. Need to prevent them from thinking this is a place where they are welcome.
    Ideas?
Appreciate any and all useful ones!

I used to raise homing/show/acrobatic pigeons when I was a kid, so I have a love/hate relation with the wild ones. Besides the normal spikes and owl/hawk decoys. I've seen people use reflective/prismatic tape (you hang it like a flypaper tape but it's not sticky) or pinwheels (with the same prismatic effect) that seem to work

It's tough. Once they start roosting/nesting somewhere, they want to stay. I've destroyed nests only to see them started again on the same place minutes later.

You have to eliminate all the spots they can perch. The stuff @23Skidoo recommended is good or you can get spiky panels from home depot.

    A nice pellet gun.
Should be legal in city limits, if not its quiet.

post up one of those fake life size owls. We did that here in AZ cause the pigeons would keep nesting above all the windows on the second floor and shitting everywhere driving our dogs crazy and sometimes even on the dogs. We put the fake owl on top of our awning above the grill. Owls are predators to pigeons so they're too dumb to realize it's not real and will stop showing around but until then get a pressure nozzle and blow their nests away. Just make sure the fake owl is easily seen for them.

    Mostly stuff I built.
Had an issue with seagulls roosting on the ridge of my tin roof when I lived in costal Louisiana. They were ruining the galvanized coating and causing rust issues. I literally built 4 chicken coops on the roof and tied off 4 game cocks on the roof with tethers just long enough to keep them apart. No more seagulls after that... Well no live ones anyway. Not even the pelicans would land on the roof after a couple of weeks. Granted this was a stilt house out of city limits and by water was the only access to it. Don’t know if chickens are a code violation in your area.

Just toss like $50 worth of Alka-Seltzer around the property and grab a lawn chair and your favorite whiskey.

I’d have to get a permit for a coop on the roof. I wouldn’t even know where to begin with that one. ;)

Chicken wire or some kind of wire mesh to cover and enclose the base of the solar panel/foundation. That should of been installed when the panels were put in.

Also twice a year you should rinse the solar panel to keep it running efficient. Depending on how dusty your area is you might need to clean them more often.

I hear cats love birds too.

I was ensured that the skirting would keep them from finding it attractive. It's just tall enough that they can get up and under the panels. Now that I have had my summer fun, I need to enact the deterrent.

Wife bough a plastic owl...only thing with that is, you've gotta move it every few days...3 story house.
Same reason why my cat won't help out. She can't climb the ladder high enough to play with the disease infested rats. I got some little shiny spinner things...need to find a place where they can actually hang & spin.

I need to put a permanent solution to keep them from going under. Small grate chicken wire would work.

Also got a pellet gun, but need to be aware of my surroundings. What goes up, will come down and I live at the edge of a housing development. Problem is, I would be firing towards the houses.

I also found out that my FUCKING Canadian neighbor 2 doors down feeds and just adores the damn rats! At least I know where the problem originates...Canada! Uhh, I mean my Canuck neighbor.

Pellet gun them when they are down on the ground feeding at the neighbors house. Will keep the pellets from hitting other houses, and maybe scare the neighbor to stop feeding them.

My BB gun I have been using to get rats (a run of the mill remington one) was quite a bit louder than .22 shorts out of a regular ol' bolt action .22

Take that data point for what it's worth.

I use a BB rifle that I painted all orange. The BB’s I use are plastic so going down isn’t a problem and my roof is the back drop so if I miss it will hit the roof. I take the opportunity as target practice now which isn’t often anymore.
