    So my blower motor resistor went on my 2012 a few months ago. My fan would only run on high, and after lots of research the consensus was the blower motor resistor. Got a Dorman replacement kit, which worked intermittently at first but then wasn't working at all. Also thought at one point it was the blower motor itself, so I also bought a new OEM one. Neither fixed the issue, I thought maybe I ruined the new resistor by leaving the fan on one of the settings that wasn't working, since there was no air to cool the resistor.

    So now I decided to go back to all OEM because idk what else to try. The kit that Toyota recommends is 87138-04070 (resistor) and wiring adapter (82141-04Q80). This resistor has the terminals in a square pattern rather than a line. I'm assuming this is from a 3rd gen and hopefully changes were made to fix the well known issue.

    Anyway, went to install the new adapter and the wires are different. The wires on the Dorman resistor are labeled ABCD, and the new resistor has ABCD labeled right next to the terminals. I thought they should be matched up, but two wires are 16ga and two are 14 ga. Wires A and C on the new adapter are 14ga, whereas on my truck wires C and D are 14ga. Does anyone know how these wires should be reconnected with this kit?

    Wires on truck:
    A - Green, yellow stripe (16ga)
    B - Blue, black stripe (16ga)
    C - White, blue stripe (14ga)
    D - White, black stripe (14ga)

    Wires on OEM adapter:
    A - Solid white (14ga)
    B - White, black stripe (16ga)
    C - Solid Blue (14ga)
    D - Solid green (16ga)

    But on the connector pictured above, the wire colors associated with the 1,2,3, and 4 molded in the plastic don't match up with 1,2,3,4 colors on the schematic.

    So you trump placement/location over color "match"?

    I dunno. LOL. It just seems weird that they would put numbers on the schematic if they didn't correspond with numbers on the connector housing.

    On the 2nd gen connector, at least the connector letters sort of correspond with the order of things.

    Connector=schematic
    A=4
    B=3
    C=2
    D=1

    And to confuse things even more, the 2 large wires on the 2nd gen connector are white/black and white/blue. On the 3rd gen connector, the large wires are solid white and solid blue.

    I agree, kind of misleading. But that wiring diagram is convincing enough for me at this point, I'll give it a go.

    So none of this made any sense with all the numbers and colors and letters. I went to Toyota today and worked it out with them. Caribe's post in #2 is accurate. This is the proper way to hook it up. I agree that it does not make sense that you would have a larger gauge wire hooked to a smaller gauge wire. However, Toyota made it this way. Hooked mine up this way and it works like a champ. Hope this helps if anyone is still trying to figure it out.

    Old Harness -> -> New Harness
    White/Blue Stripe -> (Hi) -> Solid White
    White/Black Stripe -> (Lo) -> White/ Black Stripe
    Green/Yellow Stripe -> (M1) -> Solid Green
    Blue/Black Stripe -> (M2) -> Solid Blue

    You need to do yourself a favor and inspect the large rear plug of the HVAC panel. It is prone to getting burnt as is the pin at the panel itself. It may be exacerbating issues.

    Yep so I followed this as well and mine works again! So nice to finally have fan speed back.

    Glad to find all this stuff on TW. Mine started acting up yesterday. HI only worked on my way home from work. Today, the speeds started working again, but I'm just gonna go ahead and do this replacement. Big ups to all the people posting about this and helping everyone out.

    Ive replaced my HVAC dash controls twice, used parts both times, replaced the blower motor this morning, and replaced the resistor 2 weeks ago. BTW I think you're right about the wiring switch because my low setting is the lowest, the next position to the right is slower than the third position to the right. So it seems like those 2 right now are switched. Hi position is correct. But HI bypasses the resistor so........ Also I have no wires that look melted, the second HVAC switch control is still working but it usually takes a little over a week before the switches die. Good luck. Toyota wants over 800.00 for just the switch controller.

    I just replaced my HVAC resistor with the new parts from Toyota. Resistor is part #87138-04070, harness is part #82141-04Q80. I have a 2012 Tacoma with the old wires n harness as depicted in earlier posts. Nothing made sense.

    I wired the new parts to the exact spec above and it’s works perfect. I’ll concur this is the proper wiring procedure.

    This is great thanks for the info, I just picked up the new kit from Toyota this week and was wondering about the wiring.

    I just did this on my 2011. Replaced the blower fan and the updated/redesigned resistor. Wasn't sure about the mismatched wires but this post fixed me up. Working perfectly now. Thanks!

    A slew of pricey stuff my wife hates me for.
    This is the way. Just soldered in the new harness for the updated resistor.

    Just wanted to throw a kudos out to the original poster and this thread. Last summer my 13 Tacoma did the only worked on high setting thing. I briefly searched internet but came to conclusion blower and or resistor must of crapped out, so I bought both from Auto Zone. Fast forward to yesterday, and the same thing happened to me, and I thought WTH, I already replaced both fan and resistor. So I pulled resistor back out and got to looking close at the plug and sure enough that common terminal, is brown, and the wire ever so slightly too, so I said F it, went down to Toyota and wanted to get original stuff. Guy brings me a resistor out and another bag with the new square connector. I told him, I def know why they did this, should be a recall because it's a crappy design that failed. A lot. Anyway, I asked if there was like a wire diagram that came with it because the wires are colored differently. He said no. Oh Great!

    Well I got home and thought let me do some digging on the internet and came across a few different posts. I tried a couple different ways of wiring this new square plug but I had off/low,no med1/med2/high, until I came across this post and this is exactly my wire pattern so I have all settings off/L/M1/M2/high.
    Hopefully this is finally rectified. I think I'll probably see if I can clean out my original fan because the new/autozone unit doesn't put out the volume of air that my factory toyota did. Thanks again...
