Food plots

Thought I would share some food plot experiences and also hope to get some info from others here.

For several years I hunted a secluded field behind my parents and had a little clover in front of the stand for bow hunting and the rest I planted it in soybeans every year. Always worked good and never had a problem with the beans making it. I lost that place to hunt several years ago.

Where we hunt now I planted about an acre of beans last year, they came up great but when the deer found them they murdered them.

Our son and I planted a strip of turnips about 100 yards long X 10 feet wide. They came up great. Only problem was I never saw a deer eat one and they eventually rotted.

This year I bought a bag of buck wheat and have intentions of planting it soon. Has any one planted buck wheat? When is the best time to plant it?

Gots ours planted Labor Day weekend. It’s coming up but needs some rain.

 

Checked the buckwheat yesterday.

 

Buckwheat is looking good to have not had any rain since it was planted on Labor Day.

 

Your plot looks great. I plant a dozen or so small plots the largest being 2 acres. Usually I plant Buckwheat in the spring as part of a mix that also contains Soybeans, Cowpeas, Sorghum and some Sunflowers. It always gets hammered so the only thing that really matures is the Sorghum. I just planted an Oats mix for the fall. Since you're close check out Wannamaker Wildlife Seed Company. If nothing else, he has a good product guide and planting tips. I just planted some of his AAA and I'll over-seed it in a couple weeks with more naked oats and big top radishes.

 

Buckwheat is flowering.

 

Naked Oats planted 21 Sep. Starting to come up but could use some rain.

Checked the camera yesterday and looks like he showed up to inspect the work.

 

Buckwheat still looking good despite no rain. Also ole mr 10 is walking to it.

 

In the past week the deer have been wearing the buckwheat out. It has trails all in it where they been walking and got some rain yesterday. Muzzle loader comes in November 2nd, can’t wait!

 

Buckwheat did alright for a little while. First frost we had killed it. It's just brown stems now. I guess I'll try a mix of stuff next year to try to get us all the way through deer season.

 

We usually put some winter wheat and rye grass in with our food plot mix. They seem to handle the cold weather pretty well.

 

Next year if I go back with buckwheat I’ll do that. Surprisingly this is brown and the deer are still eating it. My wife took this today.

 

Planted some Evolved Harvest thro-n-Gro the other day . Dragged a thatcher around behind the quad to loosen up leaves then hand raked .Then dragged thatcher again to scrape the dirt . Raining like hell right now .

 

Hopefully it works good for you! I don't know what I want to try and plant this year.
