    Hello All,

I'm having an issue with my 2018 TRD Sport Tacoma.

    Truck is not lifted.
    10,000KMS (6,200Miles).
Currently on winter tires and steel wheels (for the past 800km without issue).

The truck is vibrating/humming around the 55Km/H (34MPH). It just started happening this morning.

It's winter here. I tried cleaning any ice off the inside of the wheels/drivetrain to no avail.

The noise reminds me of the sound of sub-woofer at a consistent tone. It sounds and feels just like that.It seems to only start around 55Km/H (34MPH) and on deceleration.
For example; coming off the highway and slowing down for a traffic light.

When the noise starts it seems to remain a consistent tone as I decelerate until around 25KM/H(15MPH). After that it disappears. Most of the time (if not all), it doesn't come back if you accelerate to 55Km/H (34MPH).

Switching to 4WD does not eliminate or change the noise.

I stopped in to the dealer today to run it by them. They said that there was a TSB issued for the torque converter lock out. It was near closing time but they offered to do the update while I was there. After driving it on the highway for a bit and then home, it seems the update did not fix the issue.

I'm going to run back to the dealer tomorrow morning to let them know. I tired to search for the problem here and on google, and all i'm getting is threads discussing the needle bearing failure. I don't believe that is my issue (though not ruling it out).

I have to head out of town tomorrow night with the truck and I'm a bit worried this might be something serious.

I'm wondering if anyone here has any advice on where to start so I can make some suggestions on where to look tomorrow?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey all,

Still having this issue and have been in and out of the dealer non stop since.

They have my truck now and are keeping it until they figure something out. They offered a loaner Tacoma from the used lot so I'd have a truck to drive.

Can anyone out there offer some advice or experiences with this? They seem to be at a loss.

Here's some additional info on symptoms:

Mild rumble/vibration accompanied by a loud hum. Interior panels are starting to chatter & shake now.

More frequent when cold outside (been around -8deg Celcius here). This seems to be the #1 factor that causes it to happen more frequently.

Happens most frequently (almost always) when decelerating from above 60kph. Noise starts to happen almost exactly at 55kph and remains a constant "tone" until about 38kph. It then disappears.

Switching to 4wd does not change or stop.

Changing to "manual" mode and switching through the gears does not change or stop.

Placing in neutral does not change or stop.

    Dealer Tried:

    Transmission TSB - didn't work

Checked Transmission Fluid Level - said was over by about 100ml - so it wasn't low.

Swapped wheels/tires with a new truck to eliminate studded tires - no change

Were not able to replicate it on the lift to locate the noise.

    -----------------------------------------------------

I have a lot of experience with manual vehicles but not auto transmissions.

Personally, I'm leaning towards torque converter/transmission/driveshaft issues.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers all!

Install an exhaust dampener this location and be done with it...maybe

    Thanks for the reply.

I dont believe that's the problem.

It doesn't seem to change with engine rpm. For example, if I shift to neutral while it is vibrating and rev the engine up and down, nothing changes.

Is that a cure for a known issue similar to this?

    Cheers

What TSB did they do? From what I have been reading here tsb- 0062-18 has been solving the issue you are experiencing.

    Thanks for the reply!

I'm not sure of the TSB# that was performed. I just read up on that one you posted and I believe that's the one they did.

The TSB they described fixed issues with acceleration, shifting and torque converter lock out. We read the TSB there at the service desk and it sort of matched the problem but not entirely.

The cold temps seem to be a major influence on this happening....

    Cheers!

    .....it may have been
    TSB-0058-18

Apparently that's the Canadian version. I'll call them today and ask.

I just got a call from service today. He advised they may have found the problem.

Even though it doesn't go away in 4wd, they suspect that the needle bearing in the front diff is the fault.

It was -17 celcius here today and they put it on the ramp cold. He said the tech heard the groaning noise coming from the front diff.

They've ordered the replacement and said the truck should be fixed on Tuesday.

Some symptoms match but the fact that it doesnt stop in 4wd makes me a little concerned that this might not be it.

I guess we'll see on Tuesday... Hoping that's it!

Do they just replace it with a new but same needle bearing? Seems kind of dumb.

Woa, for a moment I thought your meant Decal. :D

Could you have unbalanced tires. Maybe you lost some tire weights???

It's like driving over a rumble strip. That droaning humming sound.

I do get that shudder when braking but it's very minimal. Been there since the beginning. Not sure if that's contributing or not?

They've already swapped wheels/tires with a brand new truck. Didn't change a thing.

The noise begins when decelerating. if I keep a constant speed AFTER decelerating between 40kph and 58kph the noise will stay indefinitely.

It's like the decel triggers the vibration and it remains constant until you either accelerate past 58kph or drop speed past 40kph.

Has anyone had the needle bearing issue even when switching to 4x4?

I thought if you were able to stop it by switching to 4x4, it was definitely not the needle bearing?

    Can anyone confirm that?

    Hey all,

My truck has been at the dealer since late December.

They are still waiting for the front diff bearing kit to arrive. I'm feeling that they are doubtful this will fix it but are crossing it off the list anyways.

The symptoms don't seem to match up entirely with a defective front diff bearing.

    Could anyone confirm:

It still may be a defective needle bearing even if Switching to 4x4 doesn't stop the vibration?

It seems like in all the needle bearing threads i've read, 4x4 always stops it!
    (That's not my case)

    Cheers guys!

I was searching and found this thread. Did you figure out your problem? I have the same issue. I suspect it’s bad ujoints but haven’t checked. That or driveline angle.

Sorry to hear you're having this issue!

No, they did not fix mine.

They had my truck at the dealer for about 2 months. I was driving used loaners while my brand new truck was in the garage. With ZERO help from Toyota Canada, the dealer got me into a brand new truck for basically pennies out of my pocket, besides cost to upgrade to the next model. I have a DCSB now and have 12,000kms on without issue. Seems the problem is mostly isolated to the DCLB.
