This week I replaced the factory needle bearing on the front of my truck with the @ECGS bushing. Everything went rather smoothly considering this is the first time I've ever even pulled a CV axle.

My trouble started when I tried getting a new OEM seal back into the differential. I was using a 2" PVC fitting with a bushing and seal driver set to drive the new seal in. The first seal required a good amount of force with a hammer to even start going in. Just as I thought I was at the last hit one side of the new seal became deformed as if it was never sliding into the seat correctly. I didn't feel that was going to work so pulled it back out. The seat for the seal has some slight corrosion so I knocked that down some with a minor abrasive before a second attempt with a second new seal.

The second attempt was going smoothly until just at the end when a larger section at the top of the new seal became deformed as the first seal had. At this point, it was installed so I've left it in, reassembled the truck, and topped off differential fluid.

This is how the seal looks. It held for the drive to work this morning and everything feels normal. Should I take the truck in and have my shop attempt getting another new seal in and seated correctly or drive it as is until any leaks occur?

If it ain't leaking I'd leave it alone. That doesn't look good to me though, you sure you ordered the correct seal? The driver and passenger side have different part numbers

I don’t even see how that is a possibility

That just flat sucks. I hate it when you pull it all apart and it goes sideways.

It will likely leak, and it needs to be done correctly. Just my two cents.

    Sorry man.

I just replaced my seals last week and recall them going in pretty smooth. I also used a pvc fitting to install. What brand of seals did you use?

I'm pretty sure that was the correct seal (# 90311-47027). Can you confirm that?

It is a huge pain. The truck did hold up fine for my camping trip this weekend however with no leaking. I had a piece of cardboard under that area every time we were parked.

They are OEM seals from the local dealer.

What are everyone's thoughts on how to best clean the seal seat if I end up taking it apart again to install another new one? Also whats the best type of assembly lubrication to use?

Looks like you have the right P/N, 90311-47027 replaces 90311-47012 which is the drivers side. 90311-47012 is the passenger side

In the few I have done I have not had much trouble with the drivers side but I have had to do passenger side twice because of what you describe here.

The outer seals are the same for both side. There is also a dust shield on the cv on both the inner and outer cv axle. So in total there are 4 “seals” for the front end. The only ones that are side specific are the driver and passenger differential seals aka the inner seals.

Yeah the inner seals are different. One is all rubber and the other has a metal outside.

I just rebuilt the front end of this fj just a few days ago with all new cv’s and seals and a new ome lift. The driver side has the smaller seal and the passenger side has the larger metal one.710A9990-CAD7-451A-98CA-262CB2A651C6.jpg

The outside rubber coating on the seal peeled off and rolled over on itself. You need to use come emery cloth to clean up the rust ridge where the seal goes and install a new gasket if its not already leaking yet.

The seal has been holding up as shown in the picture without leaking. I plan on checking the fluid level this weekend. If everything looks alright I might just run this seal until it becomes a problem...or warmer weather comes around again.
