Have you ever broken something in rough terrain that made you Rig non Driviable?

Today went out to Cleghorn in Southern California and we just happen to stop to check out the view, when we noticed a guy who had past us up earlier walking. Seems he had gone the wrong way and got stuck pretty bad, we ended up pulling him out but he had clearly snapped his Rack and pinion on one side which clearly made it Non Driviable. We were about half way through a 14 mile trail that was semi rough terrain. How would you get your Rig out? Will a tow truck go and get you? How much would it cost?

Has anyone ran in to this situation?

Only the off-shoots of cleghorn are actually hard, the main trail is easy. Oftentimes the priority is to fix or patch up the vehicle in place if possible. Then limp it back to the main trail and all the way out to the trailhead slowly and carefully. At least one person in the group has the 100 mile towing from AAA so that's enough to get it home.

If you off-road a few times a year its usually a good idea to get AAA 100 mile towing. Even if you don't use it, chances are someone you know will need it and they can buy you beers and pizza for a few weeks to pay you back

Stripped the ring gear on a week old 05 TRD OR in the sand on Portsmouth Island (Cape Lookout National Seashore) about ten miles away from the ferry landing. There are no services on the island and the only access is via a private ferry so I had to call my daughter to come down and retrieve me and the missus in her ZR2 Blazer (I'm still hearing about this 'rescue'). The Tacoma was left on the beach where she died (fortunately above the high tide line). I called the dealership the next morning and they said they'd handle it - no questions asked and no finger pointing. Toyota covered everything, even the cost of the ferry for my daughter. Towing charge came in right at $1K IIRC. Truck was repaired and driven 250K before being traded for the 12 I know have with no further problems.

yeah he went off one of the off shoots..he was in a Kia Sportage 4x4 , that thing does not have much ground clearance and he was by himself
I checked AAA they only cover paved roads easily accessible roads. He just left me a voice mail, he got towed out...Wonder what the cost was

My good buddy did. He was behind us and took a very bad line. Flopped. Fire. Burned to the ground.

Retrieval ? Had to get a duramax and a gooseneck and find the easiest trail to access it. Then used another runner to flop it back down and pull it onto the trailer. Hell of a recovery.

I paid $1600 to have my scrap hauled out of Uncompahgre National Forest last year. And another $600 to have it disposed of. IMG_2064.jpg

I had a CJ7. Off road on a logging route one April. About a mile from camp, hit an ice patch and ditched. Three hours of digout, decided to go on, came to a downgrade which ended in a clearing so didn’t think much, entered into a slow motion 360 into the clearing that turned out to be a semi snow covered semi frozen swamp. Posted Private property, so I just left it. It dried out by mid May and I was able to pull it out with a big ass come along. The swap smell added to the rest of its lure for years to come.

This is why you learn to work on your own vehicle. You can fix most problems on the trail.

Right, you should still be able to move it to a spot where it can be worked on though. A steering rack isn't too difficult to swap.

I know someone who got stuck recently and recovery would've cost 200 an hour.
