Hey everyone. I have a Baofeng uv-5r and I notice that when I have my radio on and the truck radio set to anything except am/fm that I get mad radio interference. The only thing I really notice that makes it stop is if I hold the HAM upside down.

I recently installed the TPAM with the intent of mounting the HAM onto it. Unless I travel with the radio off or set to FM, I will get interference. Any recommendations? Are thereIMG_1773.jpg any settings on the HAM that makes it less sensitive and could possibly help me out?

You need an external radio my friend. That little rubber duck wont do you any good inside that faraday cage.

The radiation dissipates as you move further away. Move the radios apart, and mount your antenna on top of your truck.

So you hear the noise in your truck radio when the Baofeng is on, but not transmitting? I wasn't sure if "ham radio on" was it simply running (receiving) or when you are transmitting. If you get noise into your truck radio with just the ham radio in receive, an external antenna may not do anything for you. An external antenna does have a lot of benefits though. If you get noise all the time with the Baofeng just receiving, you may have to move the radio further away or buy a ham radio with a little more FCC approval :) There are all kinds of oscillators and mixing going on in the ham radio when you are receiving although normally they don't leak enough to cause interference. You could find a fellow ham (or go to the local HRO) and try another radio (Yaesu, Kenwood) to see if it causes problems.
