I'll look into it when I get home. Never been out there myself.

Interesting. Both are about 2 hrs from me which isn't bad. I drive up to the gorges area/Jim Timmerman/Jocasee all the time and it's about an hour.

Might have to hit those up this Saturday.
Now the 1st one you have to buy a pass, correct? At the gas station?

Is the forestry service rd free?

No passes necessary, both free. The second one is actually FR982 referenced in the thread title, so not even off topic.

I would drive up NC 105, check out Linville Falls, then put FR982 on your route back.

Thanks for posting this info guys. This is exactly what I was looking for, some moderate trails roughly 2hr from CLT. NC105 and Brown have come up in other places, so this confirmed I need to add them to my list.

Soon? Not sure, but I’m much more likely to make time and go sat/sun with a small group. I was gonna throw it out there for the Queen City Off Road Toyota’s group on FB.

I went a couple weekends ago, definitely worth the drive from Charlotte.

Almost too moderate. I saw plenty of Accords and Camrys along the way.

I did read that 105 is truly more of a gravel road but that’s fine, it will be a good day trip and I’d try to do something else while up there too.

May try and get all my chores done today and pack some gear and head up tomorrow.
I've got about 500 lbs of wood in the bed of the tacoma from some downed trees a couple weeks ago so maybe I'll just bring the....cough...Rubicon up.
It's more comfy to drive anyway.

Agreed, I had a BMW following me for some of the way heading north. But some of the spots I don't see how a car could make it up. I'd say its a great stretch to work the 4wd and catch some nice views for an afternoon but not have to worry about messing anything up or breaking anything.

There was one side trail leading down to a campsite right after that Rocky overlook that everyone takes pictures at.

It was pretty gnarr and had a tight turn and a small stream crossing at the bottom.

If I wasn't working on Sat, I'd head up.
Sadly, with OT ramping up, I may not get much wheeling it at all the rest of the year.

I might get my other half to go on Sunday to check it out. As long as it isn't going to be hot as hell. May check out Linville Falls too, while we are up that way.
