Has anyone had a rear main fail and or timing chain cover gasket fail? I took my 2016 3.5L (78,400 miles) for oil change and tire rotation today. Service comes out to go over checklist while washing truck and tell me they had two of their best techs under my truck today inspecting oil seepage from rear main seal and timing chain cover. I couldn’t believe it! First thing I do is get under the truck and sure enough see some oil where the tranny and engine meet. How common has this been on the 3rd Gen? I’ve searched the forums yet most rear main posts are from older, higher mileage Tacoma’s. Any insight would be appreciated!

It's probably coming from the timing chain, quite common on 3rd gens

That sucks , some have posted about timing chain cover leaks but I haven't read about any rear main seal leaks

Thanks, Yea they attempted to clean it up some and mark it to follow up on next appointment. I checked where I park daily and found no signs of oil, seems unusual to me.

The rear main wound be pretty rare on the automatic but anything is possible Toyota doesn’t cheap out on the bottom end internals.
