Didn't properly prepare for my first trans filter change today and if it doesn't leak when I put in the fluid it'll be a miracle. Anyway did ok for the most part but when I drained it through convenient pan drain... Got a little better than 4 1/2 quarts out of it. Is that a typical amount for a filter and fluid change? Also torqued pan bolts to 65 inch pounds and was noticing on here that it is the OEM torque but others here torqued somewhere in the 30's. Was going to use Transmission RTV on gasket but read on gasket instructions to use oil soluble grease. I thought that made sense to do. Because grease would allow gasket to move and not get put into bind as it moved during torque process. Just hoping it won't leak and I can get another year or two out of it. Bought the Toyota trans fluid IV... if it needs more than the three quarts I bought would it be ok to add a quart of the Lucas? Lots of questions I know but I got to get it together its my work beater. Tuesdays coming : (

    Thanks for that thread suggestion!
Update it's a miracle it didnt leak at least it hasn't yet.
Took more fluid than I thought however I'm sure I've got a trans overhaul in the future. Maybe it'll survive for a year or better I'm Praying.
Thing that I think helped me was that instead of RTVing the gasket I did as gasket instructions said and use oil soluble grease. Found one at Oreillys that mentioned transmissions and bought it. It was an engine assembly grease and I coated all mating surfaces and gasket with it. Just enough to say I did but not excess. Then I guess as it was being torqued it moved where it needed to easier. Anyway never messed with trans before other than trans swaps and clutch issues . So far it's working good Praying it stays that way... Funds are short here lately, wife's ticked by unrelated stuff, tree fell in storm and whacked neighbors house and Etc. all the makings for a country music song.

I did a fluid/filter change this past weekend, I got about 5 qts out of it. No metal bits on the magnets so I was happy. I used the rtv but only on the pan side, no leaks so far, will continue to monitor.

Oh I had some magnetic black slime, just no visible shavings or bits, which I think is good for almost 20yrs old!
