got my needle bearing out and a tiny piece broke off, while fishing it out I knocked off the round spring in the seal. How the hell do I get it back in?

You just need a new seal. Guarantee that thing will leak if you try and put it back together. They’re only about $15 for a Toyota one. Or can pick up an aftermarket one but those are prone to leaking as well.

Use a slide hammer to pop out the old one. The use a 2” pvc coupler to very gently tap a new one in.

This. I went into it with a new seal ready to go because I've seen too many a seal leak after work like this. I just ended up mangling the old one with pliers to get it out. The PVC coupler recommendation made the install a breeze.

Shit. Everything was going good too. I guess I’ll run to auto zone in the morning and get a seal puller. U think they stock a seal that will work?

I suggest replacing the seal too. That is what I did for my install. Also used a slide hammer and pvc coupler. If you have trouble with the spring on the new one, here is how it goes on. The side you see here should be inserted into the diff.140325-1-kit_trail-gear_trail-safe-seal-comparison.jpg

I’ll get a new seal tomorrow, I think I knicked it when fishing for the broken piece. I’ve never done a seal before so I’m intimidated

Its not bad. I recommended a slide hammer because the seals really are in there tight af. With a slide hammer, you can use the little hooks they come with and pop the seal out fairly easy.

Then just wipe the diff clean where the new seal will go, and tap it in with a 2” pvc coupler and a hammer. You don’t need to hit it deep at all. Take note of the depth of the current one before you remove it.

Nothing to be intimates by, just be patient and hit the driver about 1/4 as hard as you think you should and keep it straight.

Of course no one in town had a seal. Vatizone supposed to get me one tomorrow. I put it all back together and put the front lift back on. I took it for a ride around the block. No hum, no pops, sounds smooth. Other than the seal leaking like a beech I think I’m good.

Def got a little bro lean.

If it's an aftermarket seal, keep an eye out for leaks.
