Dude you are totally right about having to re learn. My buddy rides nothing but clipless and can not even bunny hop in flats. I guess im lucky that I learned to bunny hop on the plastic crap flats that came with haro bikes in the late 90s. Even had Mag wheels on it.

I wish I would have read this earlier. I bought the Stamps :/ I hope if they arent as grippy as the atlas pedals, I can make the pins a little longer. I ran the atlas straight from the box and never fiddled with the pins. I got the large ones. Im a size 10, but wanted to experiment with the larger pedaling platform. I have a size 10 shoe, so im like right between the sizes, but I have had issues with the atlas pedals being small, but they were grippy so my foot would go to the wrong positon, then be stuck there for a few seconds. Im dropping the atlas pedals off to the guy who is buying them tomorrow. Heres hoping for the best. Got them for $150 instead of $270 retail so if they suck, I guess I can go back to something else.

Also lets be honest here. I bought them because they are gold and match the bike aesthetic hahaha

I’m sure you’ll get along with them fine. Adjust pins with washers so they make a concave. They also work great with softer soled shoes.

What steelies? I run FJ steelies on my truck. I enjoy the practicality and utilitarian aspect of them

@abacall said it best. Flats will expose bad riding fundamentals. I learned the hard way, too. But now I tend to swap between clipless and flats depending on how I'm feeling

Just picked up some Funn Mambda and 510 Kestrels I can't wait to try if I ever figure out this damn brake bleeding issue I'm having

I took a MTB class in college for fun and rode a singlespeed rigid 29er with flat pedals for fun. Easily the best thing I’ve ever done to progress my technical riding. The trails weren’t super fast but they were pretty rocky depending on what part of the network you were in. Now I’m pumping and popping off anything I can...until I get tired haha

What flats would you flatters suggest a life long clipless rider could try to give the flat life a go? I'm thinking the super economical route here, like sub $50 (used is fine).

I have some old Adidas sambas that I'd probably use to start with. My only intent at even entertaining flats is purely to improve technical skills (like proper bunny hops, etc.) that I full acknowledge I lack and have always relied on my clipless gear to get me through.

If I get a slight bit of enjoyment from that style setup I'll consider investing in better shoes/flats later on.

Oddly enough I just pulled up PB and the Oneup composites were one of the first listings. I have smaller feet, not sure if that makes any difference for models.

They are all about the same size. My wife wears a womens size 6 and uses the raceface chesters

All the companies are making comparable composite pedals now so any of those will work. I've been riding flats with Sambas for a year now

I run aluminum VP Components VP-001's on all of my bikes and they stick like fucking glue to my feet. They're also only $45 and lighter than many of the composite options, so it's pure win IMO.

The great struggle of being a mountain biker/snowboarder...deciding whether that picture is a good thing or bad thing
