Most of the trips I do require a full day - or more - of freeway driving just to reach the trailhead, so you can imagine my delight when we decided to do a trip on the west coast. Sort-of. At least, our meeting location was only four hours away - in the tiny little community of Mazama, WA. From there, we'd head north - to British Columbia, Canada - where we planned to run The Whipsaw Trail and then make our way north and west to Molybdenite Peak - before turning south again for the United States.

...All lined up, he [Dan] took it slow - careful to pick the correct line to keep his truck out of the hole that'd been dug at the bottom of the ledge. Gravity unfortunately was having none of it and as he inched his way up, it sucked him down. Still, looked pretty bad-ass if you ask me!

Check out the whole story, including all the other trucks and obstacles we ran into:

have you thought about organizing a NonProfit, etc, to bring these kinds of adventures to the Suburbs and inner-cities? I know, growing up in Renton, those kinds of adventures were possible but the demands of whatever-it-was that kept my parents and family tied to Coulon Beach or Denny Creek as our most-exciting adventures left a LOT on the table. Would it be kinda neat if groups could bring inner-city kids and their families out for adventures like these? Like Make-a-Wish but more like BigBrothers or BigFootBrothers or even Make-a-Goddamn-Fire-Once-in-your-life? The logistics of such an organization escape my brainstorm (squall at most) moment just now, but man - the way you live your life - just a token, a portion, a fragment, a hunk, a scrap, an allotment of what you experience could be life-changing for others. You obviously don't know me, although I've written this a few times - your posts are changing me a little bit. I'm considering quitting my industry after almost 25 years to move closer to the NW if I can't find another position there after my tour in germany is over next year. Imagine setting up in a city park with your tent, fire-making-classes, first aid - organizing off-road and bad-road driving courses with partner organizations. Fresh air is GOOD for people, whether they know it or not.

Anywho - that's my good(?)-idea-fairy moment for the day. it's really easy to give OTHER people work, i know...(I work for the govt, so i get it), but you created a unique position for yourself. You have credibility and experience.

This is a cool idea - I really like it. In general, it seems like a lot of fun - both for me and others, and I love the "getting other people out there" aspect of it. My biggest concern, I guess, would be the potential liability in it - something I wish wasn't an issue, but in this day and age seems to be something we have to keep in mind with basically everything we do.

Might be something to noodle on for a while though, to see if it could be made to work...

Yep. Scouts and things and survival schools operate - so there are ways around liability. Maybe yours is an overlanding course? Again, I can't really DO anything but talk to people and have ideas. :) I bet there are some attorneys here who'd help out on the hard questions.

...It turns out, we were at a spot in the trail where a spring kept the trail wet, and spinning tires on a clay-rich wet road kept the trail dug out and flexy. A spot where every last one of us would three-wheel it as we attempted to make it through...

...And then, a trip-changing discovery. As we were wrapping up photos in this exact location - and frankly, as Mike was likely wondering how he could get around us so that he didn't have to put up with our shenanigans - I happened to glance down between the spokes of my rear driver-side wheel... and what I saw took the air out of my sails.
