This is very true, but after I got used to it, I would never want to go back. The clarity is awesome.

Also watch going in a big box store like Best Buy and just comparing the pictures of the tvs hanging up .. in order to get a fair comparison they would all have to have the same settings and they don't. I went in to look at a Samsung one Christmas cause it was on sale at a great deal, the sales associate kept trying to get me to buy another brand saying " it has a much better picture " luckily i had done my homework online and had a copy in my pocket of the optimum settings .. the settings they had on it were WAY off. They do this because they can sell another tv and make more profit

Read the buyers guide to learn on types & sizes for space used.

It's a too long story, but we have 3 Visios, 2 JVCs and a small AudioVox.

The AudioVox is ~ 9 y.o., and relegated to the garage for me for college football or news when I have projects to do out there. Lousy pic unless looking straight at it.

The oldest JVC is almost 11 y.o., the main TV and still outstanding. It was pricey back in the day, but the situation at the time made it easy to justify, and it's worked out ok.

The Visio is the best for the $ spent though. Walmart, Costco, Amazon, etc. are all fine once you know the exact model you want. Then you can buy based on price alone.

Just spent about a month doing the same thing, with about the same budget, did lots of research online and at all the local stores. Talked to lots of salespeople too for their personal opinions as well as the company spiel. I ended up with a Samsung UHD 4K 60" unit for a number of reasons. First, the upgrade from 1080p to 4k is definitely noticeable. I have to quote our exchange student when he first saw a 4k video (many on YouTube) on our new TV: "Eet eez not a televiseeon, eet is a weendow." 4k cable boxes, game consoles and 4k Blu ray have started coming out already; expect it to be the new standard. So a 4k TV has some margin of "future proofing" (kind of a silly term but whatever) built in that the 1080p doesn't. Compare them side by side at your local Best Buy, etc. I did and was impressed.

Reliability-wise, of course is a crap shoot, but the general trends I saw put Vizio and LG toward the bottom and Samsung and Sony toward the top, albeit in a narrow range. My "top of the line" Vizio lasted about 5 years with various issues until it recently died. Of all the salespeople I talked to, they all mentioned Vizio having the highest return rate, but unknown whether they are returned for problems or just buyer regret. Keep in mind the Vizio is the cheapest, so that attracts the budget buyer first.

By price, the Sammy UHD hit the sweetspot for me, as the SUHD (4K+) and similar high end offerings, while visually superior, bumped the price a bit too high; i.e., above the point of diminishing returns, at least for me. As others have mentioned, watch for the sales at Costco and Sam's club. Just this one purchase could justify the price of the membership. I got quite lucky, as the TV I decided on happened to be part of a huge one day sale at Sam's club. I got it for about 850 when it was 1200 everywhere else. The guy at HHGregg said if he didn't just buy a tv recently, he'd join Sam's just to get that price. :D Add to that the $99 5 year extended warranty (I wish I would've had it for the vizio) and it was a done deal for me.

Keep in mind that the big box stores have some margin to negotiate in, and with rare exception (my deal being one of them) they will at least price-match.

As always, YMMV. Just telling you my experience. But I will be keeping my eye open for a good sale on the Xbox one s. 4k gaming and built in 4k Blu-ray player.

Ironically my TV died this weekend, picked up a 55" Vizio 4K E Series today for a what I think is a great deal at $489 at BJs (wife gave me a $500 budget).

So far so good, pictures is great although only the kids have gotten use of it so far, not a fan of having to use my phone as a remote for any advanced settings but I will mess with that later, you also need to stream any smart TV content from your phone, but I could care less about that, we have an Apple TV and a Amazon Firestick for that stuff.

For the record, it really doesn't matter that not much is broadcast in 4k yet. In fact, hardly anything is broadcast in 1080p which is the best of the original HDTV standards. The majority seem to be still using 720i or 720p. It is hard to find things in 1080p, much less in 4k. But 4K DOES bring something to the table. If you look at the edges of objects, more pixels with interpolation and anti-aliasing algorithms make things look sharper even when broadcast in a lower standard. Buying 4K is at least a form of "technology insurance".

OLED is leading edge, and also more expensive. Family member just bought a 65" OLED 4K tv for $8,000. Worth that? Not to me.

IMHO ... Sony used to be the best and now Samsung is on top in the regular consumer market for TVs.

Samsung is heavy into R&D for TVs too.

For your budget of $1,000.00 you can buy a nice TV.

If you don't feel like waiting a week to get it, that model is carried by Walmart.

Well sorry to bump this old thread but the Vizio had a slight fall and its broke...

So now Im looking to replace it. Best brand/ features to look for?

I think Chromecast is critical since I do stream to the TV and I have some 4K programming through my cable provider so that would be good.

    Thanks in advance

I've had a 65 inch TCL smart tv with roku in the living room for 2 years and a 32 inch in the bedroom, picked up the 65 for $600 and 32 for $150, love it, zero problems with it.

I've seen those cropping up more and more even at Costco. Quality is as good as vizio?

I’ve had Vizio’s before and they all went bad quickly, either turning on and off a lot as I’m watching or pixels going dark or a line or two going across the whole tv. I got my mom a 55 inch Vizio and within a year it went bad. I prefer TCL for the budget brand.
