This kind of shit happened when the 2nd gens emerged on 05 and eventually faded and then reared its ugly head again when the 3rd gens came out. Some of the 3rd gen folks are exceptionally douchy about it though.

I have 4 different sets of recovery boards and honestly I have to find a reason to use them. If you are on open diffs or 2wd, I can see the regular usage of them being standard. 4wd with a rear locker and mud terrains and a winch you can pretty much bypass the need for recovery boards. The most use I have gotten out of mine were to level my truck when camping with the RTT. I have a set I take with my 4Runner for this exact purpose since I sleep in the runner when camping.

Most of the folks I see running around with recovery boards have never even used them and have them simply because they look cool mounted to their bed rack or roof rack at parking lot meets.

Fat Bob's lift kit, 30's on stock steelies, lunchbox locker in the rear, and a ton of other general mods and additions to help the utility of the truck for my particular uses.
I use x bulls, they work just fine and reside in my truck attached to the utility track.

I keep a set of foldable GoTreads inside my vehicle. They work great for recovery as well as leveling at the camp site as each fold is about an inch to dial it in just right.FD5DBC11-28B4-49FF-9715-5BED532601D1.jpg46F337F8-470E-4C4B-939C-FF4E1E33163D.pngFEFBDE3D-3937-4911-AE40-1EC6390397FD.jpg

Soo you’re saying I should go MaxTrax? Been hearing a lot of good things about the other brands for more than half the price.

MaxTrax or other brands. At least something!! They usually paid for themselves once you get stuck LOL. I just went for the top brand for a better peace of mind. ( I haven't gotten stuck yet)

The Maxsa boards are great. I’ve had a set since 2015 and have used them several times since I got them 5 years ago. I primarily use them to level my truck out when camping but have used them for their intended purpose at least 7 or 8 times. I also owned a set of MaxTrac that I won in a giveaway. I ended up selling the maxtracs as there was absolutely zero discernible difference between them and the Maxsa boards other than the mounting holes.

I fabricated my own mounts with some 4” flat bar and 4.5” carriage bolts with wing nuts. On my Tacoma, they were mounted to the bed track. On my 4Runner, I have them mounted on the roof rack.

    Not always true.

Paying for a brand name isn’t always in the cards for some people and the brand whores don’t understand that. They will shit on every piece of equipment that isn’t on their rig because they are generally uneducated and only know what another brand whore told them at a parking lot meet. Fortunately, I am in a position where price point isn’t a driving force, but I still do my research and don’t always buy the expensive product. I chose the Maxsa boards initially based on price point just to give them a try to see if they work. They work as advertised without fail. The years of wheeling experience I have acquired(I started in the early 90’s), I have found that as long as something isn’t visibly shit quality, it will serve its purpose if used properly and maintained properly. Traction boards for most people are a parking lot talking point item as they likely will never get used because most folks that enjoy this hobby these days don’t actually wheel very hard as proven by the majority of the Offroad postings on social media. I can say that traction boards are functional if used the right way but they are completely unnecessary if you have a good set of mud terrains and know how to drive.

I'm using the XBull boards. Mounted them to frontrunner bed rails on the back with 4 inch 8cm bolts. They mount fine and have zero issues on the highway. 20200307_162454.jpg 20200307_162454.jpg

How come none of these knockoffs can’t figure out how to make them stack better? That is my main issue since I will be mounting them on my roof rack.

My Maxsa boards stack just fine. I have them on a custom mount that elevates them about 2” above the cross rails on my rack.

The maxtrax stack the exact same way. My buddy has a set of the XBull boards, and they are a pretty thick stack, but their design makes it that way.

I had a set of maxsa’s. They don’t stack just fine. 4 maxtrax is more compact than just 2 maxsa

I have the Maxsa's from Amazon for the price point and just to have a set for emergencies. For me the expensive brands; tend to stack a little better(thinner), some have replaceable nubs(not sure about replacement costs and if you're not doing burnouts on them, the nubs should last) and maybe won't fade as fast if in direct sunlight. My Maxsa's faded a bit after a year on the roof rack but I live in Denver and the sun is much more intense at elevation.

Mine stack just fine and have for 5 years. Anyone needing 4 traction boards isn’t doing it right.
