2005 Tacoma Stuck in neutral

I just finished installing a new Kenwood head unit with wireless Apple CarPlay. Part of the installation required to tap into then VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)
Took the truck for a test drive about two miles. All worked well. Came back home to put things back together. On restart about an hour later; the truck will turn on but will not engage the transmission.
BTW this an automatic transmission on a 4.0 engine
Anyone has had a similar issue?

 

Remove the VSS tap and see if that makes a difference (BTW, are you sure you got the correct conductor?).

 

Cryptic description of symptoms will not yield useful answers. Do you mean the shifter is stuck in park or you move the shifter to drive and the truck doesn't go down the road?

 

Why does it need tapped into the speed sensor? I'm sure there would be a way to trick the computer in the head unit

 

Sounds like something was wired incorrectly.

Standard troubleshooting basic rule.

It was working correctly.
I did something.
Now it doesn't work correctly.
Equals I did something wrong.
Undo the something wrong.

 

It is for the Navigation System most likely.

 

Shifter moves. Will not engage any gears.
Did tab correctly. Removed it just to be sure. Still no gears.
Wireless Apple CarPlay requires that you tab to the VSS in order to function wirelessly on this kenwood unit.

 

When you move the shifter does the indicator on the dash indicate the correct gear?

 

The indicator on the dash indicates Neutral and does not change from that

 

Update
I am happy to report it was none of the above.
After going back and tracing my steps, the culprit was a disconnected transmission shift cable.
While installing the radio I removed the center console to run the supplied USB cables to the center armrest. While there I took the time to wipe off some dirt around in the center. The age of the truck being what it may have cause the bushing on the linkage cable to come off.

I have already ordered a new bushing as Toyota only seems only sell the whole cable. Thanks all for your input

The unit that installed is a Kenwood Excelon DMX906S
The unit has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android capability.
In order to be able to use CarPlay wirelessly, one must tap into the Vehicle speed sense. On the Tacoma 2005 is found in pin #5 of 13-pin black plug at driver’s side dash fuse box - purple/white

 

So, when it was disconnected, could you still feel the detents, or did the shifter flop around like waving a salami in the air like you just don't care.

My 06 had the same problem as the bushing disintegrated. Where did you find the part?
I found an aftermarket replacement part for $25 but that is way too much for a tiny piece of plastic.
I ended up fabricating a bushing using a hard rubber grommet/plug. Holding good but should probably get the right part.

 

I found it on eBay; it is after market. Toyota only sells the whole cable; which I found retailing for $150

There was no noticeable difference when disconnected.

 

Thanks for letting us know. So, I guess if the dash indicator stays on some letter other than P, try to push the truck. If it rolls, the cable fell off. Also, if it stays on P when you shift to D, and the truck can't be pushed, the cable fell off. Looking at that bushing on ebay makes me consider that maybe I should buy 1 for my '06.

The other day, a plastic bushing in my electric stapler broke. I decided, screw it, I'll make my own bushings.

Kenwood has a firmware update for several head unit models that no longer requires you to tap into vehicle speed sensor.
