Probably answered somewhere before it I can’t find it:
Is a tow package installed at the dealership the same as the one installed at the factory?
And... why is one better than the other if they are different?
    Thnx for your help

Yes and no. The dealer can install the same components that the factory installs for tow packages - the tranny cooler, the heavy duty alternator, oil cooler, larger battery and so on. But it does not change the gross vehicle weight rating and tow capacity as designated by the manufacturer. Technically it does change it but officially what the manufacturer states is the gvwr and tow capacity remains the same as when it left the factory. So if a dealer installs the package or you install the package components you can tow the same as if you had the package from the factory.
There is a potential problem though. Some disagree with this but I think it can be a problem. If you dont have the tow package from the factory and you are towing over the stated manufacturers capacity and you have an accident where there are injuries there could be legal ramifications. You could be considered at fault and you could be sued. Odds are this will never happen but it is a possibility.

This depends on whether the dealer just installs a hitch receiver or if they actually upgrade the other components (tranny cooler, alternator, oil cooler, etc). And that'll cost a pretty penny.

    Sprig and Kitty,
Thank you both for good information. I was looking at a DCLB that didn’t have a towing package, but it sold in a flash! I imagine the cost of an HD alternator, battery, tranny and oil coolers, plus labor, would add a price shock at the dealership. hopefully another one with a tow package will come along soon.

If the tow package is important to you and you plan to or might tow over 3500lbs then just hold out for a truck that has the factory tow package. If you don’t have to then don’t mess around with the hassle of adding the tow package. Just put tow package on your list of must haves and pass on any truck that doesn’t have it. Be patient, the right truck will come along.

    Kyitti,
Sorry for misspelling of your name, auto correct overruled me.

    Hi Sprig,
Good advice... I will wait and be sure a tow package is on the list of must have items. I’ve been looking for over a year now, and missed a few. It seems like one has to snap up the offers instantly, without thinking anything over with a cup of coffee.
