I dont think anyone called it a "Dry tranny". And you didnt even drain 1/4 of the fluid. IIRC, the tranny holds about 11 quarts of fluid.

From some accounts 1.3 liters low can be the factory fill

Or 1.3 liters over

You probably did yourself a service with this unplanned excursion into auto mechanics hell! ;)

Wow man...I really hope that your tranny is ok...That will be a pretty penny to replace.

    Update:
Truck was serviced today at the Toyota dealership and they topped up the tranny fluid (ended up being a little over 2 quarts) and found no ill-effects resulting from my oil-change debacle.

Thanks again to all for the suggestions and advice. I won't be making that mistake again...

Glad to hear. Sounds like a relatively cheap lesson to learn. Welcome to TW.

Well my mistake cost $150, but while it was there I had the 30K service as well, which was $350. Sure beats the cost of a new tranny and engine and pride.

a lot of Fords are going to this. I remember the first time when my shop (ford dealer) tried to check the fluid on a sealed transmission on an explorer every one was like WTF

Sorry, noobie question, but is it a "Toyota thing" to not include oil changing information in the owner's manual? I'm new to the Toyota world (just purchased a 2007 in October), but I've never had the experience of that not being covered.

The 4.0L Toyota motor is prob one of the easiest for DIY oil/filter changes

Selecting the 'best' filter will get lots of different responses

I like the Wix XP51516....$7..or......correct plane Jane Toyota OEM for $4
