As a lot of us seems to frequent the sticks, anyone roll with a pack gun? What caliber? Semi or wheel gun? Or Spray? Foul language and punji sticks?

Im an avid mountain biker, fisherman and hunter. Im usually packing, not out of paranoia. We've had several black bear maulings over the past years here, strange, and lots of kitties. I'd prefer to ride in the higher elevations in the deep woods and like to hunt and fish in isolation.

Matter of fact, one of the recent maulings happened to a guide and the cantankerous boar was stopped with a 10mm. I think one may have more issues with bipeds with bad intentions wanting to capitalize on the isolation.

I usually carry a Smith 686 + loaded hot with hard cast with a few speed loaders. I also, waiting on a holster belt from Tucker gun leather, have a Super Red Hawk in .44. I've collected "Keith Molds" for the .44, just haven't rolled any yet with 2400.

Depending on what animals are around it’s either a S&W 69 with 305gr hardcast or a FNX45 460 Rowland with 255gr hardcast, both in a Gunfighters Inc Kenai chest holster. Occasionally it’s a Remington 870 with Brenneke black magic slugs.

I hike with a Ruger LCR 357 loaded with either Buffalo bore 38+p outdoorsman or 158gr 357 JSP’s. I’d probably be better served with the 3” LCRX version (or a 4” k frame, but I love the light weight and trigger of the LCR) but I haven’t felt the need to spend the extra money for another inch (twss). Holster choice depends on the location, activity, and weather. Main concerns are grumpy moose and interior Alaska brown bears. More caliber would probably be better but 357 is my personal limit for cost and recoil, especially in the LCR.

I love my 1911s but I bought my Redhawk chambered in .44 mag for just this sort of occasion.

Get a raging judge and just load with whatever large caliber shell you like. 45, 454 casull or a 410 slug/buckshot mix. It’s a very large gun to carry though. Really kind of kidding but I don’t live around bears or big cats.

There was actually a study that pulled a lot of stats of attacks and some bears have been stopped by a 9mm. Congrats on your first buy!

I have a .460 magnum. Its nothing more that a very hot rodded .45. It will chamber .45 LC and .454 Casull also. Its impractical for New Mexico, but its pretty fun to shoot. I have no problems hitting a gong with authority at 100 yards with it.

A friend has one also and took on a hog hunt in Florida. He hit a biggin. The energy lifted the behemoth swine off all fours, killing it on the spot.

To stop a bear all you have to do is shoot it in the head. :burp:

Just about any major caliber, with a proper tough non-expanding bullet, has enough power to break through the muscle and bone to get to the brain... the hard part is hitting that 6-8” target that’s behind angry teeth and claws charging at you down a trail and through the trees and bushes at from 20 yards away at 30+mph!:cookiemonster:

And there lies the problem, plus adrenaline. I think if you are competent and comfortable with what you're carrying, chances increase dramatically. I have seen videos of bears charging, they can flat close the gap in a blink of an eye. I have yet to have any issues, even tho I am in bear and kitty country every weekending riding or fishing. That doesnt meant that it wont happen, I fish solo every now and again. I dont go looking for it either.

I had an interesting encounter while out mountain biking not too long ago. My wife and I were resting on the side of the trail in a very secluded spot. Some random guy steps out of the brush at 8K feet elevation. Nothing odd about that.. He had two cantaloupe side rocks in each hand. He stopped to shoot the bull. He saw my nonverbal statement, kept looking at the rocks in his hand. He stated he was a rock collector and was taking them home. Weird, we went our separate ways after talking for a bit.

For MTB rides in known brown bear areas like northern Idaho, hill people gear kit bag with my USP .40 in it.

    For camp / truck duties:

Encore pistol with a .300 Win Mag barrel oughta do it. The shock wave will kill anything the bullet doesn't :D

Yeah, that got both of our immediate attention. I was packing the Smith below. It didn’t come out, but it was within hands reach. That was pretty freaking weird. Happened in the mountains surrounding Grindstone Lake, Ruidoso. Most the mountain bikers only do half the run, we do the full 11 miles and rarely see another soul until we drop into the lake.
