Canadian TRD Tacoma's don't get LED Lights

I am lovin' my first truck, a 2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road Double Cab Short Box Premium.

But it does not come with or have the option for LED headlights and LED fog lights. My American friends get these awesome headlights and fog lights, I'm so jealous, those headlights are awesome.

The first thread my Canadian friends should read is the thread on headlight bulbs and that going out and buying a pair of LED headlights and replace the halogen bulbs is not the best choice to do. The headlight assembly is the main component that is designed around the halogen bulbs.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-hid-vs-led-vs-halogen-h11-projector-headlights.589465/

Now the crazy thing is if I go to Toyota's VIN Decoder site at and enter my 2020 Tacoma VIN number it describes my vehicle having LED headlights as factory standard equipment. The fog lights are also listed but are not as LED...

    https://www.toyota.com/owners/my-vehicle/vehicle-specification

    LED VIN RED.jpg

I have physically removed the halogen bulbs and confirmed they are as follows...

Low Beam Headlight Bulb - OSRAM H11 12V 55 Watt made in Germany.

High Beam Headlight Bulb - PHILLIPS H9 12V 65 Watt made in Germany.

I do have LED Daytime Running Light (DRL) in the headlamp assembly.

    Fogs lights are halogen also.

I have ordered the "General Electric H11 MegaLight Ultra +130%" as a upgrade to improve the low beam brightness. This is a high quality, brighter halogen replacement which may not last as long as the "long lasting, reliable, low quality" factory bulb. Toyota does want bulb failures to give them a bad wrap! I'm also keeping the factory ones as spares in case of a failure.

Replacing the entire headlight assemblies (Left and right) is the best and most expensive way to get a properly engineered LED headlight system.

These headlight assemblies will require an electrical adapter harness to connect the 4 separate blub connections to 1 single connector on the LED headlight assembly.

There is also another option to purchase third party headlight assembly from Morimoto or MESO Customs if still available.

When your buying a new vehicle you should take the time to visit IIHS.org and see how the vehicle you own or plan to own rates in safety...

    https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/Toyota/tacoma-crew-cab-pickup/2020

    https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/Toyota/tacoma-extended-cab-pickup/2020

Headlights (Varies by trim/option) - Halogens are rated "Marginal" and LED are rated "Good".

You may find that the majority of vehicles with halogens are rated "Marginal" or "Poor".

This is a possible reason we find auto dimming bright headlights. It would be interesting to know if that feature is on vehicles that have LED headlight assemblies.

Probably due to a lack out heat output to clear ice, y'all freezing most of the year up there.

That is a good point I forgot to mention. HEAT from the halogen is good!

I have an HID swap into the low beam projector housings and like them. Fortunately my mazda had H11 low beams so I pulled those when I traded it in and just put them on the tacoma on the second day I had it. :D Highly recommend.

Probably to do with some canadian laws maybe to do with DRL requirements. Headlights have to go through approvals before they can be used.

You can get the LED headlights in Canada, just not with the TRD Sport or Off-Road packages.

OH. That blows. Ah well, probably a taxes or certification thing somehow. I don't know how, though.

The addition of LED headlights, which I'd love to have, might push the price over the tipping point. I think these trucks are expensive enough here in Canada.

I would have added the LED Headlamps to my Off Road if it was available. I had no interest in the LTD or Pro models just to get LED headlights. Still disappointed that the Sport and Off Road models don't come with LED headlights.

I drove from Vancouver to Whistler last night. The halogen lights definitely need some improvement. I will look into doing the 2020 LED swap eventually. I prefer factory over aftermarket when it comes to lighting. The fact that they are DOT legal is the biggest thing for me.

Oh I would have paid the extra too. I think in the USA it's only 500$ USD extra.

I feel I paid for them but they were not included as noted in the VIN specifications.

Canada follows most US standards. I do Commercial Vehicle Inspections. So the codes are sometimes I have experience with.
