When did having a "V6" become something you wanted to advertise.

We had a V8 crown vic, grand marquis, country squire and they had "V8" on the sides or the rear. Our mercury cougar was a V6, and had no emblem on it. I guess being a "V6" wasn't really something that you wanted to advertise back in the day. The skylark had a I4 and a v6 in the generation we had it (Think it was an 82 or 83?) . We had the V6 but even though being the top skylark with a 6, they didn't put a sign on it. Everyone knew it was a V6, you just didn't want to admit it wasn't a V8. NOW, if its a V6, gotta put a badge on it so people know it's not an inline 4.

15 years from now, my next truck is going to have a bad ass badge on it that says "GAS"

I did the same thing with the bed sides and I have black mud flaps without the 4x4. I'm thinking about getting a trailer hitch plug with 4x4 just so I feel better. :)

You could get one of the 4X4 windshield strips and mount it upside down. Then not only will people know you have a 4X4, they will also know you you have one even if it is flipped over on the trail.

Ha, like the dumb jeep stickers that say something like "if you can read this roll me over." I'm not that concerned about showing the 4x4 but I had a second gen guy say his truck was different than mine because his was 4wd (with the stickers all over to prove it.) I corrected him but something understated on the truck would be cool.

Yea, that's where I stole that from......LOL . Honestly, I like a completely de-badged truck as much as I like the gaudy giant Pro sticker that I see on some. I like it all when it is tasteful. I like the modified bed side stickers with mountains etc. I like when people have endorsement stickers too. I'm a sticker kinda guy though. I would like to replace the OEM bed stickers and pin stripes on mine with a black pin stripe and replace the bed side with a MD flag version. But that is just me. I saw on this forum a guy in Hawaii with the dessert sand colored Taco that added black racing stripes down the top, two wide inside flanked by two thin outside. That was really freaking cool looking to me, but then I am old and like racing stripes too. I like when people remove the B pillar black vinyl on the 3rd gens and I like some of the vinyl added to the scoop on the sports (not a huge fan of the oem Toy vinyl scoop version).

I never look down my nose (within reason) at anyone that does anything to make their vehicle the way they want it to be. It's their money and time not mine. Plus I used to be a biker (if that is a thing, now that I don't have a bike, although it's not a permanent gig, I may get another) and bikers are notorious for making their bikes as unique as they are. I think this forum truly shows off that same characteristic. I really like seeing all the different mods people do. I get a lot of inspiration form this forum. A lot of guts to do things I wouldn't consider without learning on here. Man it would really suck if there was some sort of rule that mods are forbidden...imagine never knowing which truck was yours.....so I say everything is good, no matter what (again, within reason, cause I have seen some real WTF is that crap).

I like to see customization on people's rides. Long time Harley owner here. To each his own. But, misrepresenting what you drive is stupid. I had a BMW 335i for a few years. It was not an M. Saw a lot of non-M bimmers sport the M badges. Makes you look a fool. My made for Canada 16' TRD Sport has no tailgate 4x4 badge and the damned climate control is in C°...

I added it myself (and the TRD emblem) ... I guess Toyota felt the stickers on the back of the bed sides were good enough.

The pre-production and testing models definitely had the "4x4" tailgate nameplate on the TRD Sport and Off-Road models. It is also included in the 2016-2017 brochures for Canada and USA.

According to my reading of the parts catalog, etc., it appears that all 4WD models should have the "4x4" on the tailgate except TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road trucks. I did a bit of searching and haven't been able to find any non-promotional 2016 TRD models that have "4x4" on the tailgate. This includes early production vehicles (within the first month of production).

Toyota has played a bit fast and loose on the emblems/nameplates on the Tacoma over the years (early Limited models for instance, and the gloss level on early 2015 TRD Pro trucks), but in this case, it does seem that only pre-production TRD vehicles had the nameplate.

4-Cyl 2WD: No nameplates on tailgate.
    4-Cyl 4WD: "4x4" nameplate only.
    6-Cyl 2WD: "V6" nameplate only.
    6-Cyl 4WD non-TRD: "4x4" and "V6" nameplates.
    6-Cyl 4WD TRD Sport/TRD Off-Road: "V6" nameplate only.
6-Cyl 4WD TRD Pro: "4x4" and "TRD Pro" nameplates.
