I think this all boils down to your fault. I’d you had a cleaner truck and better thread, this wouldn’t be a problem.

Nice build! I’m not a typical 3rd gen owner lol. I’m planning to do something similar on the front end of this truck in a couple years (do not like the weak ifs in the rocks). If you guys don’t mind me asking do you think I should bother or just buy an older truck to cut up with less electronics?

If you want to get really into crawling, you'd probably be better off financially and size/weight Wise buying a mini or a first gen taco. Now if you want the challenge and comfort of wheeling the larger 3rd gen and you have the money.. then fuck it lol. Either way it won't be cheap and gonna take tons of fab work

I would look for an older truck personally. What I like about my 02, although it's getting a bit ragged these days, is the balance between comfort, simplicity and offroad ability. It's easy to work on with minimal electrical systems, but just enough to be cushy for long drives to the trail. It has cruise control, will do 70-75 comfortably and the AC works great even when crawling all day in 90* heat. It's also pretty light and small. A 3rd gen tacoma may have too many systems to fail, be too big (its almost the same size as an early 2000s full size f150 or 1st gen tundra) and to $$$ to start banging off of rocks.

This. When I build another truck it will either be a wrecked 1st gen taco, or a 3rd or 4th gen 4runner. The 4th gen runners are a bit on the complex side, but I am one of the 5 people on earth that like the way they look and always wanted to build one.

You can axle swap a truck pretty cheap if you know where to buy parts, aren't scared of rusty used junkyard axles and leaf springs. Not every build costs $10,000+ for an SAS.

    Cool
I did my SAS for about as cheap as one could do it, I was not afraid of used parts, and buddy hookups which some people are afraid of for some reason. I did it for about half of what others have said they paid and the price of "kits". About the only thing "bling" are my air bumps and RCVs, the rest is boring old stuff and tech that works for what I need it to do: get me to and from the trail (8hr drive on average) alive, and wheel reliably which it has done perfectly so far.
