Big ones are King suspension, SSO bumper w/winch, Pelfreybuilt sliders.
Plus you can fit a spare that is 275/70-17 in the stock location, so I would do that.

Yes that what I was wondering. Just got my first truck, I've always been a car dude. I bought '19 Tacoma OR and I upgraded tires to the 17" TRD rims and the KO2's, but my spare is still the stock tire which is slightly smaller. With a flat I obviously would have to switch out and not sure if 3 bigger tires and the 1 stock would cause issues underneath. Obviously I would drive straight to a place to get it changed back, but wasn't sure if I should have just bought a 5th tire of the same. Thanks for the answer.

This is the exact situation I’m in. That’s why I was thinking of just getting a 5th wheel and doing a 5 wheel rotation.

I bought 5 once. I'll never do that again.

IF, and only If you ever need to use the spare, it won't hurt it to use it for a short trip, even though it's smaller.

Why wouldn’t you do it again?

Waste of money, when there is a perfectly fine spare that came with the truck. The odds of ever needing your spare is smaaaaaaallll!

So here are a few more thoughts: car / truck tires only last for 6 years; after that time period they are dry rotted / prone to catastrophic failure. The big chain tire stores have a policy of not servicing tires more than 6 years old because of this. Additionally, the tire size difference can be an issue, (although it is correct that you can limp for a while, the differential is designed to handle different rotation speeds) and the reality is I'm unlikely to get a flat around town where I can limp with a smaller spare to a tire shop, so I want a matching size tire. A matching wheel was 80$, and if I'm going to shell out for a new tire every six years, I may as well put it in the tire rotation and get my money's worth out of it. The downside is the TPMS situation: the truck only stores 4 codes at a time, so instead of just doing a TPMS reset when you rotate, you'll have to actually relearn the tire that is coming into the rotation. There's a specific device to do this, and the feature is not available on carista afaik.

The 255/85 R16 fits in the spare location ok, but for me it touched the exhaust heat shield. I dropped the spare tire mount, and remounted it a little farther towards the rear of the truck by putting the forward bolts in the rearward holes, and drilling new holes for the rearward bolts. Plenty of clearance now. I also for piece of mind put a piece of fabric (like carpet padding, but it was used as shipping packing material) on top of the wheel face when I reinstalled the spare.

Realistically it depends on what situation you're preparing for whether you should keep the stock spare and change it every six years, get a matching size and change it every six years, or even do a five tire rotation.

Sorry for bumping up a old thread. But I’m just wondering what you are doing for the TPMS when you add in the 5th wheel ?
You help and time are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

Here's the deal with a 5 tire rotation, regarding the Tacoma TPMS.

Each sensor has a unique ID. The truck can store four IDs. Unless the sensors get rescanned after a5 wheel tire rotation, the truck will be reading the pressure of the tire that's now a spare.

Additionally, when you rotate (4 or 5 wheel), you need to do a TPMS reset. This updates the position of the sensors in the display, and sets the minimum pressure warning.

I haven't done the procedure myself, but talked with my mechanic about it.

Discount Tire where I take my truck is able to update the sensor information on the truck for me. You just have to be very specific with them when asking them to do it.

My solution is, rotate your normal 4 for their tread life, then take the one with the most tread and put that on your spare location when you buy 4 more. Here in NY I change tires in the fall if they are less than 7/32 nths.

The TPS just doesn’t work and the light on the dash stays on.

Anyone running a larger 285 tire on their stock spare and run into issues hitting the control arm?

If my spare is 9 years old and still holding air, it will do in limp mode to get me the garage. Then I'd decide if it's good to go again. No worries about TPMS, no spending money on another tire, no 5th wheel rotation, nothing......

I hope you're not planning on going far/fast/offroad with a dry rotted tire. Have you ever experienced a blowout while driving?

Certainly it's possible to keep a tire past the recommended date, especially if you store it correctly and maintain the air pressure. But if you're going to do all that work, why not just run it as part of the tire rotation?

Actually that's sorta my point. How far are you gonna "limp"? If you're 15 miles down PINS with no cell service, are you just gonna wait for the next car? Big Bend? Sure, if you daily it around town, NBD. But I'm not preparing for my 2 mile commute when I make these decisions.

Hell what about if you're on the back side of the mall!?

That is why I always recommend running the spare on the rear axle
