I did it for years and it helped. Did all the steps etc. But after a few years it got to the point where I didn't think about alcohol much except at meetings. I just do what works for me which is to stay away from it. Last drink Dec-6th, first day sober

I can't imagine the situation you were put in. I couldn't even dream that up though I know it happens each and everyday somewhere. I've witnessed it more than I care to remember. But I just cannot fathom someone actually doing that. But what I have learned in life is trauma, PTSD, depression, etc... can take a real hold of your life and you will find a way to numb the pain if you can. That's the path I chose and I regret choosing that path but it is what it is. I did it and I take responsibility for it. But as I've mentioned in the past, it's just a bandaid approach. I'm very happy you have a great support system as that is what we all need as we navigate the path out of the darkness.

    Yes Sir,

Thank you, it is terrible to contemplate how someone could do such things to anyone, let alone a child. I made the conscious decision to break the cycle and raise my step son differently, to never lay my hands on him. Now, I see the nurturing father he is to my grand son and it fills me with pride.

Thank you again for starting this much needed conversation and for all your good works!

Congrats brother. You and I are about on the same time scale. I would like to say that it gets easier and for some it does. I was lucky (if you can call rock bottom lucky) in that it scared me so badly what could have happened that I never took another drink. But, I also realize that it is a very real struggle for some each and every day of their life. So hopefully the intent of this thread is to be here for a place to come and find some comfort that we are not alone in this.

Excellent, keep it up. Took me many tries to get it right and at one point never thought I could go 8hrs without. Mine was Saturday 12/7. Seems like yesterday but 26yrs. :hattip:

Chin up man, the only thing braver than your service to your community, it the fact that you are putting your addiction struggles in the public domain.

Kudos for fighting addiction every single day, and even more Kudos for reaching out to others who may be struggling.

Great job. It’s not easy. My last drink was 2/17/02. It’s been a roller coaster ride that included 2 liver transplants, getting married, becoming a father, buying a home and getting my shit together hahahahaha!! I’m not a religious man but I had to find a power greater than myself to crawl out of the sewer. Everyone follows a different path in sobriety. I still attend two meetings a week to give back what was given to me.
