What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

Are there any write ups with pictures about which wire to cut in the kick panel. I found one about cutting and wire tapping behind the HVAC controls but nothing about the kick panel. Seems like the kick panel area might be easier (more room to work).

 

There sure is! I found this thread after some searching and referenced it religiously whilst doing mine. I liked the idea of working in the kick panels rather than unmounting my balls out off-road ram mounts and removing my pioneer double din.

Same boat, I have a 2011 at 140,000 and as the 3rd owner I have a feeling the plugs have never been replaced. I need to call my mechanic now! Haha!

 

Second owner of a 2010. The previous owner changed the plugs at 60k. When I hit 120k i changed them out. Have seen a noticeable change in mpg, and driving performance on the highway. Pretty easy to do yourself. I used this thread to help me, and it took me 2 hours. It would have gone way faster if I knew what I was doing initially.

I would like to make a comment in regards to spark plug changes. Ensure that your gap is correct. I bought my plugs from the dealership "pre-gapped" and had horrible misfiring without tripping the CEL. I found that the gap was obscenely off, .021-.025 on the "pre-gapped" plugs as opposed to the factory .039-.041 recommended gap.

 

If you're not checking the gap, got probably shouldn't be changing your plugs.

 

Ironically I check them religiously and never had an issue. I'm typically accustomed to working on performance vehicles for clients (all sorts of jdm and European transmission and engine modifications a-z) but when it comes to my own vehicles its easier to be lazy. The one time I didn't check it bit me in the butt... I knew instantly what it was after starting it...


Sucks but it's true.. the guy you trust your 1000+ hp car can't even install his own sparkplugs right

 

I ordered my plugs from Amazon, same gaps right out of the box. Did your dealer say they were correctly pre gapped, or just pre gapped? semantics.

 

Good idea or nah? On @At The Helm front rail system for spare tire?

They always state they're pre gapped but I know better most of the time... Not this time obviously hahah

No worries, no offense taken! Just thought it was funny that someone that does what I do can be caught off guard sometimes. Always trust but verify lol

More than likely you drive short trips in cold weather. Very common. Just unburnt moisture.

 

Run for a few miles and then check....not time to panic!

The truck is driven for mostly long trips and towing... at or near the desert.

Not a good way to end the day!

Autozone said the CEL is for the crank position sensor... time for me to do research on head gaskets and crank position sensor replacements.
