Hey I am looking at going to Oceano dunes later this year, can you tell me anything about it, did you camp there, were the people loud after hours, I have stock tires on my 2019 off road will that work, I know it can get windy on the beach I used to camp in Rocky Point Mexico so used to it. Any info would help. I did see I need a whip and flag on my truck as you do. Looks like reservations is the best way to go for camping

The Oceano Dunes SVRA web site is a great resource, including this map. It was my first time there. I met up with some friends who have met there annually for the past 20 years. They made reservations through this web site. We camped at the Oceano Campground off Pier Ave. I didn't notice excessive noise but I am not one to ask since my group tends to drink and tell stories late into the night. The church group that camped all around us did not complain. It wasn't windy when I went in September. Your 4wd and stock tires will take you anywhere you want on the dunes. I didn't even air down one day and the truck had no problems. It reminded me a little of driving through snow where I grew up in the Chicago area. Keep your momentum up. Trade speed for altitude and altitude for speed. Yes, you need a whip with flag. Have a great time!

    Issue:
    1. Clutch pedal returns most of the way but not all the way. Sometimes need to pull it back with my foot about an inch or two.
    2. Clutch pedal squeaks sometimes.

    Solution:
    1. Bleed the clutch master and slave cylinders. I used the technique in this video @05Taco4x4 posted in this thread. Out popped a bubble. Clutch pedal return is back to normal.
    2. I figured the squeak was due to a bad, or in my case, non existent bushing between the spring and clutch pedal assembly. I bought the little plastic bushing at my local Toyota dealer and proceeded to remove the clutch pedal assembly with help from these pictures . My truck has ~147K miles and an unknown amount of time without the bushing. When I pulled out the assembly, I found the spring and the spring bracket had worn each other badly - circled in red:
    IMG_2165_LI.jpg
Time for a new clutch pedal and spring. Groove Toyota had the parts in stock.
    Clutch Pedal $86.71
    Torsion Spring $24.74
    Clutch Pedal Pad $4.91

Installed a new 24F Interstate battery from Costco. I went with lead acid instead of dry cell because of:
    1. Lighter weight (~ 20 lbs lighter)
    2. Lower cost ($96 vs ~$310),
    3. I see little to no corrosion issue on the battery terminals or metal below the battery tray from the old lead acid battery.
    4. I like Costco's 36 month replacement warranty and national presence.
    5. 700 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) is enough for what I need.
The old Exide battery was due to expire next month and its width was a little smaller than the stock bracket width which allowed the battery to slide on the more extreme bumpy trails or when jumping. The battery would move enough that the negative terminal and ground wire disconnected. A bungee cord seemed to solve the issue. The Interstate battery has the correct width for a tight fit using the stock bracket. I don't think I need the bungee cord anymore.

Took a five day trip to Utah's San Rafael Swell area. There were five of us in three vehicles. We stayed at the Temple Mountain Campground East, which is just north of Goblin Valley State Park off of Temple Mountain road. The retired offroaders slept in their campers while I tent camped with my buddy, Mr Heater.
That key buy just before the trip made those windy 30 degree nights bearable. It provided insta heat in the tent, but I only left it on for about 5 minutes at a time because I was worried about asphyxiation or burning down my tent while I sleep.:cookiemonster:

Just North of the Goblin Valley State Park gate we turned west on to Wild Horse Road (1013)

    IMG_2209.jpg

We saw the old homestead that rests just along the edge of the Muddy Creek.

    IMG_2213.jpg

and crossed Muddy Creek, which was shallow as expected this time of year.
    IMG_2214.jpg

We took Factory Butte Road out to Hwy 24 and in to Fruita, Utah where we had cherry pie at the Gifford house just past the visitor center then checked out a scenic viewpoint nearby.

Glad to see you found Eagle canyon too! That's a fun section of trail.

I liked Eagle Canyon. It was empty except for one part as we were heading down towards the arch. There was a group of about 12 ATVs heading up the trail. A woman, likely the group's Mom, with no helmet, struggling to keep up, brought up the rear. As she inched by, I cracked up when she turned her dusty face towards me and exclaimed, "My next trip is going to be a cruise!"

I've been busy scouring the internet and junkyards for parts for my offseason project since returning from the San Rafael Swell area late October. There are a few issues with my first gen that I wanted to address.
    1. My daughter is driving now and she has use of the 2014 Corolla, so I drive 45 minutes to and from work in Winkle. I miss the steering wheel controls the Corolla provides and the hands free phone calls.
    2. Even though I have many different types of paper maps for trails, I still miss a turn here and there. The last trip, there was a mine remnant I wanted to check out but missed and I still haven't found SOB Hill approaching from Georgia Pass. @JDM and @Littles suggest using offline map software with GPS.
    3. The information Scanguage provides is nice. If I ever get a Check Engine Light (CEL), it would be helpful read the CEL codes, fix and then clear them.
    4. All my friends' trucks have backup cameras, I want one too. :cookiemonster: And maybe even a front camera! That could be useful on the trails.

I added Steering Wheel Controls (SWC) mated to a Dasaita head unit.

Huge Shout Out to @mechanicjon for his Steering Wheel Conversion write up and providing wiring guidance.

The Dasaita integrates a GPS enabled Android tablet with a stereo and has the ability to wirelessly download applications such as the GAIA GPS map app and Torque Pro app (like Scanguage). It also provides Apple Carplay and the capability to add both rear and forward cameras. I can connect to my home network or use my phone as a hotspot. 2019 Name brand head units have some of these features but not all and most of their screens are smaller then the 10" Dasaita screen. Quality Mobile Video has a good overview of the Dasaita features.

    IMG_2344.jpg
    IMG_2315.jpg

    After:
    IMG_2367.jpg
    IMG_2373.jpg
The screen has the ability to translate up and down, which will provide better access to the HVAC controls if desired.

    Installation Details
Here are the parts I collected over a 3 week period to make the Steering Wheel Control / Head Unit upgrade:
    IMG_2345N.jpg
    1. 2006 Tundra Steering wheel off EBay from Inter Mountain Recycling $131.20.
Lighter grey Bluetooth phone controls off a 2003 Sienna from Littleton U-Pull $3.
Littleton U-Pull is very organized. I like how you can check inventory on their website at home, which provides the vehicle's row location before driving out to pick out your part.

    2. 2003 Sequoia single connector airbag. $173.25 off LKQonline's EBay store.
I google searched on and off for about 2 months for a black or grey steering wheel and a matching airbag.

    3. 2004 Tundra Cancel Cam bracket $2 Littleton U-Pull.
The bracket interfaces perfectly with my 1999 Tacoma steering column so I had no need to modify the cancel cam like shown in the official writeup. The picture shows the 2004 Tundra bracket with the 1999 light and wiper stalks installed. The 1999 Tacoma bracket is shown for comparison below it.
    IMG_2352.jpg

    4. 2004 Tundra Clock Spring $100 Yota Jim's .
Oops! Clock Springs can be found online for about $35 as I learned after I bought this one. New ones from Toyota are around $135.

    5. 2003 Sienna pigtail wire harness (black connector). $2 Littleton U-Pull.
2005 Tundra pigtail wire harness (white connector). $2 Littleton U-Pull.
The donor wire harness with the black connector provided the extra wire I needed to install in the white connector's pin 3 location. I did not buy a car wire removal tool to remove a wire from the black connector since smashing it with a hammer and retrieving an unscathed wire works just as well.

    6. Mestart Bluetooth OBDII Car Scanner $9.99 from Amazon

    7. Dasaita HA2186-MAX6-CP $479.99 from Amazon
Can be found cheaper via bidding at aliexpress.com but I think aliexpress ships their head units from China and it takes a little longer then the three day delivery I experienced from Amazon.
    Features:
    10.2" Adjustable Touch Screen (1024 x 600)
    Bluetooth and wireless connectivity
    GPS antenna
    Microphone for hands free calling
4GB RAM, 64GB ROM, and a micro SD CARD slot (up to 64GB) for storing Maps and music
    Rockchip PX6 64-Bit Quad-Core 1.4G + Dual-Core 1.8G CPU processor.
    3 USB ports
    double din
    Software includes:
    Android 9.0 operation system,
FM AM Radio with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and Equalizer,
Wireless and wired Apply Car Play, Android Auto
    Steering wheel control pairing
Provides internet browsing and downloading of applications.

    The Dasaita head unit includes items 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16.

    8. Dasaita connector to ISO Connector adapter.

    9. Tacoma connectors to ISO Connector adapter $11.90 from Amazon

    10. USB adapters.

    11. RCA adapter for front and rear cameras.

    12. Video output adapter (I do not use this).

    13. Wireless antenna.

    14. Microphone.

    15. Brackets - Not needed - Can modify existing Tacoma stereo brackets.
The image below shows the 1999 Bracket installed on the Dasaita. The Upper right screw required its hole elongated. The bottom, red/gold colored screw required drilling a new hole in the bracket. I used a hole punch on some tape, set the tape's hole, (sticky side up) over the hole in the Dasaita, then located the bracket on the Dasaita. The tape stuck to the bracket. The hole in the tape located where to drill on the bracket.
    IMG_2351.jpg

    16. GPS antenna.

    17. Dasaita 170° Angle HD Fisheye Lens Reversing Camera $22.68 Amazon

I needed to buy a soldering gun, solder, heat gun and heat shrink and practice soldering. Thank goodness for You Tube videos. No wonder the soldering I did as a kid sucked. I used to heat the solder!
Now I heat the wire and let the solder flow onto the hot wire.

Here is how I connected the wires.
    Wiring.jpg

This photo shows the white connector with the donated wire from the smashed black connector in pin 3 (light green/red).
    IMG_2357.jpg

This photo shows the steering wheel control connections pin 11 brown/white and Pin 12 light green/red connected to Dasaita wiring harness (Key 1 orange/white and Key 2 white/red). It also shows the pin 1 green illumination wire and the pin 10 grey/red EAU ground wire connected to Blue Connector R1A's pin 12 green/orange wire and the pin 9 brown wire.
    IMG_2360.jpg

The horn works, the SWC buttons light up when head lights turn on, and cruise control on/off works. Unfortunately, cruise control RESUME/ACC sets the speed, SET/COAST cancels and Cancel does nothing. The next post discusses how to fix the cruise control switch issue. The airbag light stays illuminated. A few posts later I show how I fixed it. I need to learn how to clear the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) codes.

On a good note, the head unit connections work flawlessly. The Dasaita booted right up. I programmed the steering wheel controls, radio stations and connected to my home WiFi. GPS antenna showed my location on Google and iphone maps. The Mic worked good when I called my wife via Apply Car Play.

I pressed the microphone steering wheel control and asked Google to find the GAIA GPS map app, which it did. I paid the $40 yearly fee and it installed. The next step is to learn how to download the maps into the Dasaita's 64 GB memory. Hopefully GAIA will reduce the number of "Wrong Way Winkle" issues. This next season I will find SOB Hill approaching from trail 258 off Georgia Pass!
    IMG_2372.jpg

I pressed my microphone steering wheel control again and asked Google to find the TorquePro app, which it did. I payed the $4.95 fee and it installed.
    IMG_2370.jpg

I installed the Mestart Bluetooth OBDII Car Scanner, and paired it to the Dasaita.
Now I can monitor the Tacoma's Electronic Control Unit measurements and clear CEL codes if needed. This setup will not clear SRS codes for my 1999 Tacoma. Darn!
    IMG_2371.jpg

I am so glad @mechanicjon posted the "Steering Wheel Conversion" thread. I would not have attempted the conversion without his guidance. I installed the steering wheel and head unit over Thanksgiving weekend. While I still have a cruise control connection issue to fix, I have been enjoying my new Steering Wheel Controls (SWC) and head unit while driving to and from work.

    Cruise Control switch issue.
Page 161 on the 2000 Factory Service Manual (FSM) wiring diagrams states that
If I check resistance on pins 5 and 3:
I should read a closed circuit with the main switch on.
If I check resistance on pins 4 and 3:
I should see 68 ohms with RESUME/ACC switch on
I should see 198 ohms with SET/COAST switch on
I should see 418 ohms with CANCEL switch on.

I have a 2006 CC switch with the 3rd wire mod. I went to the junkyard and found an equivalent Cruise Control switch off a 2003 Sienna to compare with my modified 2006 Tundra CC switch. I took resistance readings from the 1999 Tacoma, the 2006 Tundra, and the 2003 Sienna CC switches. For the 2006 Tundra and 2003 Sienna I took readings from pins 1 and 2, pins 1 and 3 and pins 2 and 3.
    Here are the test results:
    CruiseCntlReadings.jpg

Now I understand why, for me, cruise control RESUME/ACC sets the speed, SET/COAST cancels and Cancel does nothing. Because
    the 2006 Tundra's 240 ohm RESUME/ACC is activating the 1999 Tacoma's 198 ohm SET/COAST function
    the 2006 Tundra's 630 ohm SET/COAST is activating the 1999 Tacoma's 418 ohm CANCEL
the 2006 Tundra's 1541 ohm CANCEL does nothing for the 1999 Tacoma.

So one solution is to find a Cruise Control switch with the right resistances. I believe 2002 - 2004 Tundras and Sequoias have compatible Cruise Control switches. However I have not verified this assertion because I chose a different solution.
The other solution is to swap resistors.
@mechanicjon unsoldered the incompatible resistors, and soldered compatible resistors. Problem solved.

    Dasaita thoughts:
I am not a sound aficionado, I still have the stock speakers. The head unit sounds as clear as the stock stereo to me when there is a strong radio signal. However, I experience more radio static as if the radio signal is weak compared to the stock radio. I checked the radio antenna
connection to the head unit and it is solid.

I like the touch screen position on the 1st gen because reflections are not an issue. The driver looks down at the screen and any reflections will be of the floor or passenger seat which are typically dark. The screen is viewable with polarized sunglasses. At night the screen's brightness is comfortable - not too bright but easily viewable.

I like how the screen is closer to my hand compared to the stock radio controls. I do not have to reach anymore.

The bad thing about the lower position is that it averts my eyes from the road. I have to make sure I do not stare down at the screen.

I wonder how this Chinese head unit will handle bouncing around on dusty trails in the hot summer? I will find out soon.
EDIT: After four seasons bouncing around on dusty trails in the hot summer - the Dasaita is performing quite well - no heat issues.

A friction ball joint connects the display to the head unit. It allows the display to rotate. I look at this cantilevered design and wonder if the bouncing around on the trail over time will cause the ball joint to lose its ability to hold the display in the right position. I left the styrofoam that came with the packaging between the display and the head unit. The styrofoam should help distribute some of the display load over the head unit faceplate reducing the load on the ball joint.
Edit: After 3 seasons, this concern has been a non issue. The friction ball joint is as solid as ever.

I positioned the display to clear the CB radio, which makes the top of the display interfere a little with the HVAC controls. However, I can still access the HVAC controls easy enough. If I ever remove the CB radio, the display has the capability to translate up and down about +/- 2.5 inches so I can move the display lower to clear the HVAC controls completely.

Issue: Boulders bend my tailpipe bracket and cause the tail pipe to bang on the leaf springs.

I got a little artistic and cut it with the flair of motorcycle exhaust pipes I've seen, while trying to make sure the hot exhaust gases clear the spare tire.

    Airbag light stays on issue.
I checked all 12 pins on the Clock Spring and all had continuity. The pins for the airbag passed the continuity check also.

I went to the local auto parts store where they hooked up their code reader to the OBD2 connector and got the SRS error codes.
Current - B0105 Short in Passenger squib circuit
History - B0105 Short in Passenger squib circuit
History - B0101 Open in Driver squib circuit

B0101 occurred during install when I turned on accessories to check voltages with the airbag uninstalled so I know I set an SRS error code at that time. But that is history now.

B0105 passenger? I did not mess with the passenger airbag.
First step on page DI-486 in the Factory Service Manual says "Check the passenger airbag manual on-off switch". Guess who forgot to plug in the wire harness connector to the passenger airbag manual on-off switch when reinstalling the plastic dash piece.

    Problem solved.
