Impact Gun

I’m looking to purchase a cordless impact gun to work on my truck with. Does anyone have any suggestions?

 

For home only? Don't go too crazy, Dewalt or Milwakee make some great units. You won't get u bolts off with <$500 models, but the standard home models will kick the crap out of wheel swaps and most suspension jobs.

I have the mac big version of this. It's been so-so professionally, but at home it kicks the llamas ass.

This is the perfect time to buy one! christmas and fathers day season you generally can get an extra battery. Last christmas i bought myself a ryobi 1/2" impact driver. I worked on my dirtbikes go carts and now outboards and trucks. Its never let me down, the battery lasts forever, and it gets dropped all the time with no issues. For the holiday season you might find it for around 100 battery included. they are carried by home depot mostly. Let us know what you buy!

 

I have Makita 18v in both Impact Driver & 1/2" Impact Wrenches; love em! The Impact wrench I use for changing tires (higher torque), & the impact driver for snugging up nuts before torquing & removing anything smaller than wheel nuts.

 

I posted 2 different threads and it really went hand in hand with the onboard air I had gone with.

Anyway, the one that was mentioned the most was a Milwaukee Fuel Impact and that's what I went with.

I'll never go back to breaker bars and hand tools ever again as I've added multiple Milwaukee Fuel powered tools.

I prefer Milwaukee stuff. Havnt gotten a 1/2 impact yet because i dont need it for work. But i run a ton of their other stuff

 

Rigid works for me, 1/2 and 1/4

 

I like Craftsman because they get the job done every single time with no hiccups and they're as affordable as can be

 

I was watching a video about their drill bits. They out preformed the Milwaukee bits by alot. But the Milwaukee bits suck

 

If you dont mind having it on it's own battery system, then I have heard good things about Harbor Freight's Earthquake XT impact, mostly because it isnt made in China.

 

Yeah man. Really well built stuff. Obviously not the best in town. but for the price of craftsman tools, you just really can't beat em

 

My vote is on Ridgid. Lifetime warranty on tool and battery. Sold my Snapon to get Ridgid. Plus, lots of other useful tools to add which use the same battery.

 

I used a craftmen drill for a year. I liked it, no issues. Still use alot of their hand tools

 

I bought the Porter Cable 20v 1/2" impact because I already had other woodworking tools and the 20v batteries. I've done ubolts, lower ball joints, shocks and of course lug nuts. Honestly can't remember if I used it on all of that but I do know it hasn't failed me yet. That, I would remember.

 

I have the porter cable as well, going on 8 years with zero issues

 

Bought a Kobalt 1/2 inch a couple of years ago, works great for everything I need it to do. Lots of good choices out there.

 

Like @windsor I went Ridgid for my drills and small driver, for the lifetime battery deal. Because when the battery fails (and it will) on others, it costs enough that you'll consider a whole new unit instead.

If you go the Ridgid route, be SURE you file the warranty on line promptly. If you miss the filing window, no bueno.

I had one battery fail so far. A phone call to Ridgid gets you a new one in the mail pretty fast. And be sure to then register the new battery........

Outside of a bit of paperwork, they work great and offer a excellent value.

I needed an impact for what I thought would be one-time use so didn't want to spend a lot. Got the Harbor Freight Earthquake XT and have used it quite a bit with not issues at all. Cost around $200 if memory serves. All I need for my vehicles.

 

Here's the 2 I have.

The little m12 has 250# of torque. Plenty of power for almost anything.

I disagree.

The big M18 has 1400# of breakaway torque! If that's not enough power, chances are you're going to have to use a torch.



For an all-around impact, Milwaukee makes a mid-torque M18 1/2" drive with about 600# of torque, but it's still reasonably light. This should be able to remove almost anything you'll need.

Dewalt and Makita are good brands as well. I use Milwaukee so it's just what I know.
