Todays fun on the 2009 with 155k was the 3 idler pulleys, the tensioner, serpentine belt, and the alternator. Idlers and alternator all pretty easy and straight forward.

The whole tensioner assembly is underneath the alternator (OK changing same time) but then the AC compressor is also bolted on top of the assembly. I attached a video link that's helps for those that need a tensioner etc. The 4 AC bolts are hard to access getting off so watch the video but he uses a garage rack and I use jack stands and the floor so never as easy. Its for an FJ but same 4.0
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhG9owRQFy0

To get the alternator out remove the battery , tray, and unbolt the wire retainer between battery and engine - you will see it. Then you can move the wire bundles out so alternator can be pulled up and out.

Bottom line is the tensioner was getting pretty loose and slight grinding when spun. All the pulleys were worn with a slight groove and all appeared to have belt slip at some time. I changed as during hard downshifts to accelerate I could smell the belt.

New belt was needed and even got the wife to hold it on the PS as they are hard to get on alone and oh no she got a dirty hand, not compared to me all day.

Nice timing, I need to replace a crankshaft position sensor which is hidden by the alternator.

    Just added pics.
Look at the AC pic and think that's it but under AC compressor also if that's the one.
If not done yet and higher miles do that tensioner assembly while you got it all exposed - only 5 move bolts and easy ones.

As an unprofessional mechanic for over 40 years that video was cringe worthy at best, especially when the cat failed to manipulate the alternator bushing before installing that bracket. Hammers are not a go to tool for this.

My OEM pulleys all came in boxes not plastic shrink cards and all 5 items cost about $300 with discount online so that pack is 1/2 the cost so doubt OEM.

I am getting ready to replace the tensioner and idler pulleys on my 08 Tacoma. We changed the alternator and belt out last July and choose not to do it then. Well now I'm getting noise and they are all sloppy. I work for Napa Auto Parts and I bought the gates belt tensioner kit 90K-38411. We will be getting into it tomorrow. Hoping that we don't have too many hiccups.

I've had a brand new OEM tensioner sitting in a box in my garage for a year now because of how bad I'm not looking forward to this job.

Don't have a major issue, the pulley bearing seems okay but the tensioner shock is weak the belt slips in heavy rain when the A/C is on causing a slip fault with the compressor and turns the A/C off randomly. The green A/C light will flash when it happens, it's just annoying.

FWIW, the Gates kit from Rockauto is $185 + tax & shipping (if applicable)

The install at my local Toyota dealer is quoted at $1131, parts & labor.

Looks like the most difficult part is digging your way to the mount bolts for the tensioner. Based on this Vid, the alternator wires do not need to be disconnected nor do the lines for the AC need to be disconnected. The Alt and AC just need to be dismounted and jockeyed around a bit, no need to remove.

Thanks for the vid link. Been looking for something like that.
