Speaking of losses, I took a loss last year that will max me out for 4 years ($12k loss, writing off the max of $3k per year). I have more than made that back this year.

I am not a trader, just saw the opportunity to cut losses and shift strategies at the same time. I have almost no turnover this year other than buys. Started the whole dividend thing at that time.

I have a few stocks where every time I log on I contemplate selling it all and just taking the losses but I'm somewhat in a long hold position in the industry(damn marijuana). Cant decide if I want to take all the losses now and use the remaining money better or hope that the industry eventually turns around in a decade lol. I've made back all my original investment thanks to the mj stock boom last year so I'm kind of playing with house money in these stocks at this point.

I don't really believe in selling at certain loss points as some people do. An example, ABBV, was down about 20% for me. I kept buying, even more when it was down. Now I am up a lot. Either way, I was getting about a 6% yield, so wouldn't have sold regardless of price. Just an example that stocks do, probably usually if they're quality companies, come back.

Indeed. Buy stocks you believe in and use (Costco for me ..example) and buy more when recessions/downturns hit. Warren B rule I always remembered.

I follow Warren Buffett's advice, I'm skeptical that any of us jabronis can outperform the market in the long term.

"A low-cost index fund is the most sensible equity investment for the great majority of investors," Buffett told Bogle in his book "The Little Book of Common Sense Investing." "By periodically investing in an index fund, the know-nothing investor can actually out-perform most investment professionals," Buffett said.

What is your plan to make money with this? Hold and forget for 10 years and maybe it will be worth a lot? Trade in an out for small gains? I would like to get into crypto, just no idea how to do it. I also fear that it could become worthless in the future, that's my biggest concern.

Hold for a long time. I'm using robinhood so you only own the rights to own it, but you don't actually own it (at least this is what my crypto nut friend told me)

Hey guys. I am sorry I have not been around lately, but I wanted to thank you for the advice and "light" reading here. I did move most of my stuff to M1. It seemed like a descent platform. I am still trying to figure out how to get some gains quick then turn to some longer term investments.

Yeah right. I know! Debating starting for a year or so with some high yielding stocks such as CLM. Monthly payouts and high percentage. I will not go all in on this by any means, but a higher percentage of my infant portfolio. I am interested on what some of you guys have which are supplementing your incomes. I am not sure who it was here that stated they stopped working at 49. Was that because of investments? or other personal reasons?

Looking into M1, it looks like they only do trades once a day at market value? That kinda sucks...

Yes. That is a good point, but right now I do not have enough income coming in and with my schedule it is hard to get online there much. What is your recommendation?

I don't know that I'm qualified to give a recommendation...
I'm currently using robinhood (this new cash, interest, debit card thing is cool in concept) and I'm using Webull (I was able to roll a 401k into a qualifying IRA with them)

If you're just doing a buy and hold thing, I guess there wouldn't be any problem with M1 but then I guess there wouldn't be any problem with putting it all with a regular brokerage and forgetting about it.
If I'm going to have a self-directed account, it would be frustrating to me to be limited to once a day at market value. If I wanted to buy something, and was after the window, it sounds like my trade would be executed at whatever market value is tomorrow during the window.

That CLM looks interesting, but the risk number seems a little high. If you're young enough, it might be a good option. I stopped working at 49 because of a combination of things. I had been putting the max into my 401K after the stock market tanked in 2008 and had it split between small cap, mid cap, large cap funds and a little bit in bond funds. I was at my company for 26 years and the company has grown from around 1-200 employees to now over 3000 so the company ESOP went up like I never expected. So I have a decent amount in retirement stuff but I can't get to it yet without paying the extra 10% penalty. So I'm living off savings at the moment and if I need to, I can tap into the retirement stuff and pay the penalty, or I have a rare musclecar that I can sell if that makes more sense. The 401K and IRA stuff I have moved into low risk monthly dividend funds that generally make around 3.5-7% and I'm good with that. I will probably go for SS at 62 and that will be like bonus money if it's still available. I'm 53-1/2 now so I have a ways to go before I can safely touch the retirement stuff so I'll let it just keep building itself by reinvesting the dividends into more shares. I think I'm up around 1900 shares so far this year with one more dividend payout before the end of the year.
