The only issue is you still need to be in range of a digipeater. In most places in Nevada and a lot of places in the Sierras there is no repeated coverage so APRS is as useful as a cell phone. But when it works it works.

You are 100% correct! You have to be in range...but when you are I would not trade it for anything. I used to run both channels on my FTM400 both scanning...now I use the "B" or bottom channel for APRS and the top one for scanning or using the freq to chat with folks I am out with.

I've gotten into the habit of writing down when the satellites pass as well, just in case. As many tools as you can have, right?

That's right. No need for a digipeater when you have satellites. The freq & PATH are different than ground based APRS I use ISS Detector as it's geared slightly for finding APRS satellites. And you can use manual location on a 10 day cycle if without service on the location you'll be at.
I APRS'd my location via satellite every day on my 13 day trip in Death Valley to my SO.

I recommend a directional antenna. I use an Arrow Yagi w/ a baofung. Breaks down and fits in a tent pole bag.
