Need shock help

For Christmas my brother bought me Bilstein B6 4600 shocks for my 06' TRD Sport SR5 4x4 access cab with tow package. It is completely stock atm with Toyo ATII tires. But I'm wondering if I go to 5100 what it will do to the ride quality. I do use this for hauling for work every couple weeks and go wheeling every couple months. The trailers I haul are between 3500 lbs and 5500 lbs I'm looking for something all around. I got the truck with 124k on it (I have 192k now) and have been not been super happy with the ride, I think it pitches too much in corners and braking but I might as well not even have shocks installed at this point as they are original to the vehicle. So I need so outside advise. The company has a 30 day return policy and we at at day 18 right now. So that's the reason for the new post. Please help me here. I have very limited time.

You sound like you already want the 5100's more than the 4600's. They will 100% ride better. Plus if you chose to add-a-leaf in the rear or any rear helper, the 5100 handles the extended height better.

I would do 5100's, and an add-a-leaf, or a sumo spring in the rear.

 

The only reason I'm asking about her 5100's is because he also bought his wife a 2019 4Runner Off-road 4x4 that had 5100's on it because it road better than the stock off road, but I don't know if that it would feel the same in a taco.

I've read in other post in the past that the 5100's only feel better if you go to something like OME884 and heavier rear leafs( don't remember which one's atm)

 

I have an email somewhere from Bilstein stating that 4600 are the same in quality and function as 5100 except they are not adjustable. That is the only difference other than color.
We put the 4600 on my Dads' '00 Tacoma and the ride improvement was just like when I put 5100 on my 2012.

 

I was just looking at 5100's and I thought I read the rear shocks don't work with stock height trucks. Maybe another member can correct me if I'm wrong?

 

Almost every 5100 listing says 0-1" of lift in rear.

 

What ajustability do the 5100's have? Spring perch? Preload? High-speed and/or Low-speed compression and rebound?

 

Thank you. My bad, I didn't see (OP) was looking for gen 2 5100's. The info I was quoting was for gen 1 5100's. on the DSMS page:

The ride height is adjustable on the front Bilstein below from 0-2.5" and can use your stock springs.
If you set at the second from top position Tacoma with stock coils will be raised about 1.75-2".
Then as in post above you can add height in the rear and best is full spring packs with Dakars but price may determine. They really help towing and no sag.

I installed 5100s not to long ago with 3rd gen coils up front and icon 3 leaf progressive aal. It rides very nice imo.
You could also look for a take off set from a 3rd gen in the bst thread.

 

Not meaning steal a thread, question for Larzzzz - with that setup you have how much lift did u get? what did u set 5100's at? Thanks.

So after further consideration I think I'm gonna stay with the 4600's. Thank you all for your input and the information. I was gonna pull the trigger and get the 5100's and do a lift but I think I might only keep the truck for another year then either get a newer Taco or a newer Tundra.
